Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
Does anyone know of thrift stores, antique shops etc. that sell furniture. We are thinking of trying to find eclectic pieces that we can pull together to decorate our bedroom. We are not opposed to finishing/painting things that need a little TLC. I just need some ideas of where to go to look for stuff, other than looking on craigslist.
Thanks!

My dad always goes up to Broomfield, CT (i think) and gets a lot of great pieces.
eta-- also, I think the Pier shows are coming up (on the west side of Manhattan), and you can definitely get stuff there too.

If you look on craigslist and search for shabby chic or vicky's vintage you will find the person you are talking about. i actually have an appointment to see her furniture tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes!

Re: Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
my parents go to auctions a lot its not as expensive as you think but you need to know your prices and furniture. I will find out the names of the auction houses.
To be honest you can do well out east driving on the major roads. I found a few places going to montauk but summer they jack up the prices.
I also got on a list of estate sales on LI since this is the type of furniture I personally like.

Bucks County as well.
It's easier to buy stuff and then paint and distress than you think. Plus you love it more b/c you did the "shabbyy-ing" .
The flea markets at the Garage in Chelsea used to be great. I think there is a bus to take you to the new location in the Garment Center as well.

her stuff is not antique
just because something is old, does not make it antique! Besides, she paints everything, so it ruins its value, IF it was actually an antique
to the OP- do your research when buying an antique. they are more $$ than items that doesn't qualify. Alot of people try to re-sell something that is old and call it antique when its really not. if your not looking for something within a time period or has value, you don't need antique, you can get great stuff that isn't. And if your willing to refinish it yourself, your much better off.

Re: Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
You are better off finding something amazing and redoing yourself as many of the shabby people on Craiglist just slap on paint and use a sander to get that look.
I have a table I'm looking to sell if anyone is looking for a small drop leaf table that has spindle legs. It's green and white distressed. I can email you pics if you are interested.

Re: Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
Yard sales have the best stuff! I agree with the OP... old doesn't always equal antique. People are sneaky. Good quality antiques are expensive, something us newlyweds don't have a lot of so I like to buy distressed pieces or pieces I like then distress them myself with paint, tobacco glaze to give it that aged affect and a sander giving them that antique look at a fraction on the price.
Try yard sales in the right neighborhoods... I like South Amityville, Babylon Village, West Islip, Brightwaters, and South Bayshore... they always tend to have the type of stuff that I like. I also like church thrift stores, Salvation Army, etc. My favorite piece that I own is from the Salvation Army. Sometimes they get too much furniture and have a half off day.

I second yard sales. I'd also recommend Estate sales, I've gotten lots of great things going to those!

Re: Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
Thanks for all of the responses, I truly appreciate it. I should have clarified, I don't necessarily need antiques, I am just looking for furniture that will work in our space, that will last a while. We bought our house 2 years ago, and we are finally trying to decorate and make it our space! Took us a while!
Anyway, I am happy to say we found two dressers through someone on Craigslist. I did meet up with the person that was mentioned on here-Vicki. You can find her stuff on craigslist by looking up Vickis Vintage. She had some really nice pieces, reasonably priced. We did like two dressers but when we finally decided to purchase them, they had been sold! She also recommended this woman Michelle, that is based in Centerport/Huntington. If you look that up on craigslist, you will find her work.
We fell in love with two dressers and nightstands that she has. She is going to paint the for us, and we should be able to get them within a week or two! I am so excited!!! Her work seems really great, we saw some other pieces that she had painted and I loved them all!
We also went to some stores that were recommended-the one on 25A in Northport was awesome. We went to the one in Patchogue on Main Street, that had a few accessory type things that I liked. We also tried to go to the one in Bayshore on Main Street-apparently it's closed. They had tons of stuff just piled up and thrown about the store! I bet there are some great treasures in there!
Anyway, now that this is so long winded, thank you all for the help and suggestions, I appreciate it! If I can figure out how to post pics, I will post some of the dressers when I get them!

OK, so what do you pay for something like this at a thrift store?

Re: Antiques/Thrift Stores for furniture
I got an 'antique' (may not officially be antique) cradle for DC from a church thrift store. It was in mint condition with a brand-new-in-plastic mattress. I paid $20.00, but they basically gave it to me!
