any 2 1/2 year olds waking up scared at night?

i don't understand - my son has always been such a great sleeper. He is now afraid to sleep by himself and he wakes up in the middle of the night scared.. He tells me that he needs someont to sleep with hime and that he is scared... one night he was scared of the "donkey" in his room
what can i do to help him sleep through the night?

My son will be 3 in May and the same situation has been going on for the past 2 months. My friends son as well is going through the same thing. I think its the age. and its prob. night terrors. Honestly, I just console him and tell him there is nothing to be scared about. There are no monsters..... I check his closet and he goes back to sleep.
