Any green thumbs out there?

Please excuse the complete lack of knowledge I have in this area.

If I want to have a nice garden in the spring, I'm supposed to be planting bulbs now, right? What type of bulbs should I get? I would prefer low maintenance type of flowers - like impatiens.

Am I supposed to remove all the impatiens I have out there now? Is it too late to plant mums?

I should really be embarassed by all these dumb questions but since I get to hide behind a keyboard, why not I say? Chat Icon

I dont think its too late to plant Mums....

Last weekend, we planted about 300 bulbs..........tulips, dafodils........and a whole bunch of exotic looking ones that I cant remember the names of that will bloom in the spring.

I say........its not too late........Plant Away! Chat Icon

As far as your impatients, I wouldnt try and dig them up. That may be a waste of your time.....

Try to plant the bulbs around the impatients as the impatients should be removed when they die and you don't want the bulbs to be unearthed at the same time.

Also, if you have bunnies nearby - they LOVE tulip bulbs, so plant daffodils and other bulbs around that they don't like. I lost all my tulip bulbs b/c of this.

And you can still plant mums, but they will need to be pulled out when they die as well. They don't return.

I just dug up my imaptiens, they are startign to look crappy. If they look fine & you don't need the space for something else, leave them.

I planted mums 2 weeks ago. It is my first time with them , so I am not sure when the ideal time is, but this weekend is probably still ok. I also palnted some decraive cabbages.

Bulbs should be planted now. I jsut planted 20 hyacninth & 20 daffodil bulbs last weekend. You have until the ground freezes. You can do tulips too, btu squirrels love the bublbs & rabbits love the flowers.

They all come up in the spring , but only last a few weeks, so it is best to get a variety of things that bloom at different times. When then die off, you can plant annuals, like imaptiens, if you want, around May.

If you want bulbs that come up later, try lillies.
