Any Local 3 wives out there? Did your DH get laid off?
Mine just called and he was not happy. He got laid off this morning and apparently it could be 36 weeks again....
He was really making a good impression on his foreman and was almost going to become a sub-foreman and then BOOM! Laid off.
He really gave the guy a piece of his mind. The foreman said he did everything he could to keep him, but the guys out have to work.
I feel so bad for him. I know we'll be OK, we've been through it before, but it just stinks!!!!

My Dad is a Foreman in Local 3 and cousins/brothers are in the local also..Havent heard them mention anything about lay-offs~
Is he on furlough?

Mine is still working (as of yet). I heard it was 36 weeks back when his friend got laid off in December.
I know it's tough, but hit the funds up for the mortgage. The old timers on the job are telling everyone to deplete the B fund because it's not "protected".

my dad is local 3 and he just retired but he said that most of his friends were laid off. I remeber growing up my DAd would get laid off alot. Some times it would last long sometimes only a week. The job has great benefits though, but this is def a downside... My dad would drive a taxi off the books so he could collect unemployment and make ends meet...

I am not 100% sure,,but I believe they charge you interest when you take money from the b-fund to make mortgage pymts....I would check before using that option..if it is necessary

That's if you take out of the 401(k) fund, you're charged interest.
If it's the B fund, it's taxable but no interest charge.

DH is in Local 3, but he's still an apprentice, so they can't lay him off.
Sorry he's going thru this. I have a friend that was laid off for 6 months. He just started working again.
It's such a good job, but sometimes it really sucks.

FH is an apprentice too. But his uncle just got laid off.

LIRR is hiring electricians if anyone is interested. Not the same earning potential, but good pay and steady work.

thanks ladies, I am sure everything will be ok, it's just so frustrating.
We have used his B-fund before, so we know that's an option.
DH actually took the city test for Sanitation Electrician, a little less pay, but it's yaer-round work. He dad could get him in tomorrow if he wanted.
Local 3 is going down the tubes too.

My DH is Local 1(plumbers). Right now they are busy but 2 years ago was scary for us. I can sympathize with you. I hope he gets another job soon

No, no furloughs are going out because there are too many people laid off.
Your husband's job is safe, he has a hook. I wish DH had one.

Have to say, I agree. They have great benefits but DH said they have scabs on the job. A buidling is going up in midtown Manhattan that is completely non-union.
DH got in trouble the other day for telling a scab "Sorry this elevator is full" & made the poor guy wait for the next elevator. (It was only DH & the elevator operator in the elevator )
I told him I thought that was mean. He said, "No. Mean is when you through the foreman or the contractor of the scabs off the side of the building." Personally, I think he's been hanging out with the old guard too long.

I am Local 3 and my super was saying that he needed to lay a guy off because of lack of work but my foreman was able to get the person transferred to my job on Monday. I feel for you.
If your DH has a CDL he will be called back to work a lot sooner. (An ex-coworker was called back after only 2 weeks unemployment because he did time last year on the bench).
ETA If they gave him his lay off at 9:00 am, then they must like him because some foremen wait until 30 minutes before the end of the day!!!

He is currently on furlough.
Its so annoying I have to admit. The union used to be so much better.

My husband is also in local 3. Last year he got laid off the third week of January and didn't got back to work until October 25th. He was out for 9 months and the worst part was you can only collect 6 months of unemployment. He got laid off again Feb 16th of this year and went back to work April 9th so this time it wasnt as bad . Now he says that because he was out for so long hes guaranteed 6 months of work but who knows. He said his company laid off more guys this week.
