My FIL works for local 3, has since he was 18 and he is 60 this year. The layoffs have gotten worst over the years. Last year he was out of work more than half the year, once for 5 months straight. He is thinking of retiring because all the layoffs are crazy.

I am Local 3 and my super was saying that he needed to lay a guy off because of lack of work but my foreman was able to get the person transferred to my job on Monday. I feel for you.
If your DH has a CDL he will be called back to work a lot sooner. (An ex-coworker was called back after only 2 weeks unemployment because he did time last year on the bench).
ETA If they gave him his lay off at 9:00 am, then they must like him because some foremen wait until 30 minutes before the end of the day!!!
DH was already laid off for 8 months last year!!!! 
And the worst part was that his foreman really fought for him to stay because he is so dedicated, not one of those who blabs on his cell all day and does nothing.
He even got a call from a super today who couldn't believe it. I kept saying if they all think he's so great, how come they can't keep him? He's only been back off the bench for about 8 months.
Hopefully it's not that long this time.

my dad is local 3 and i remember his layoffs well - he now takes advantage of them to get stuff down around the house
good luck and hopefully he will get placed sooner than the 36 weeks!

There really IS a shortage of work. My company has TONS of work coming up, but right now at the present time, there is nothing so they have to let go of the people. Everyone is saying June/July there will be a ton of work with all the big jobs going up, so stay hopeful!!!!!
And I say again, get a CDL!!!!! My boss keeps telling me to get one for my future as well and I am really thinking about it.

My Fil is the Vice president of the biggest Electrical company in the city, they have so much work, and they are laying off.

It really stinks right now, and I hate the fact that they can't have a hiring freeze. What's the point of hiring new people? They really need to so SOMETHING......

They are on a hiring freeze. I passed the last test. Went for my interview and everything. I'm guarenteed to get hired. There is still a class ahead of me from the test before mine.

Maybe there is no hiring freeze but that class still hasn't gone through yet. He advised as of right now if they call me don't take the job.

You mean as an apprentice right? I know someone that started working about two-three months ago. They go out in groups usually. I started school six months before I actually went to work.
On a side note.... do they still do the peg test?

No, no furloughs are going out because there are too many people laid off.
Your husband's job is safe, he has a hook. I wish DH had one.

My FIL is local 3 and , he is retiring July 1
he has been on furlough several times in the past year
my Dh said they hired so many new people they used to have a strong union but because they hired so many people the furloughs have gotten a lot longer

From what I hear, the union is not the same. My father has 40 years in the union..started at 19 (sweeping the floors of the shop and getting the guys coffee)~ He attends the union meetings, functions, dances and has been on the interviewing board for A division candidates. He has made many friends and contacts throughout the years. He has decided to retire in February since he isnt sure what tomorrow will bring in the union. He has been a Foreman for many years and would like to retire as one.
My father always tells my brother and cousins to attend the union meetings, show your face and dedidcation.

LIRR is not that easy to get into. You really need to know someone just to get called. My dad and brother are local 25 and my dad would have a lot of 4 day work weeks, b/c the work is just not there.
