Any nurses out here? Injection question
My mom has MS and I give her, her injections. I have a question and don't know who to ask. It seems that when the shot gets a big air bubble or two, it hurts her. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of the air bubble before I give it to her? It is a prefilled syringe.

Is it Lovenex by any chance?
You are not supposed to push the bubble out of those syringes, the bubble acts to keep the medicine from flowing back and prevents bruising.
I'm sorry that its hurting her

It is Avonex. It seems like when I am breaking off the top of the syringe to put the needle on top, I am making the bubble worse or making another bubble, but there is no way around it. It is a snap off cap. Honestly, she says that shot itself, although BIG, does not hurt, but when we get down to the bubble it bothers her. She does not complain too much about it, but it is only to save me from feeling bad. I HATE having to do it. I do not like hurting her and it is a constant reminder that she is sick I just want it to be as easy on her as possible.

Re: Any nurses out here? Injection question
Are you injecting it cold or room temp? That might make a difference. You should take it out of the fridge and wait 30 minutes

Re: Any nurses out here? Injection question
I'm sorry that she is going through this She certainly has a great daughter who is willing to do this for her, many people cannot handle something like this.
The bubble in the syringe is going to ensure that the medicine doesn't leak back and that all the mediciine in the syringe goes in. It sucks that it hurts her, but it may cause bruising or damage of the tissue if its not "locked in place" by the bubble.
Maybe experiment with different ways of removing the cap in order to not make the bubble larger? Are you pulling the needle straight out after its injected? Are you rotating sites? Just trying out some ideas.

We take it out a few hours earlier as per the Avonex nurse. It has made the shots sooo much less painful and at times totally pain free. When we first started a few years ago, we did not know this and used to take it out just before giving it. Live and learn.

Thanks for your response We do rotate sites, arm, arm , hip, hip, leg, leg. The arm is the worst, I think. She says that the shots themselves do not hurt 99% of the time. It just seems like everytime there is a big bubble or two, she knows it. She says that it is fine, but I fear that I am hurting her and I hate that.

Since it sounds like the bubbles are always there, and it doesn't hurt 99% of the time, I wonder if you're hitting a nerve. I'm a diabetic, so I'm quite familiar with injections. My injections rarely hurt (I fill my own needles, so I don't have any bubbles), but if I tap a nerve, I definitely feel it.

It isn't actually the injection that hurts. it when I get to the end of putting the meds in(by the bubble) it seems to hurt. The seems to be very thick and it is probably unavoidable. Like, I said, she does not really complain, it is just hard as her daughter to think I am causing her any level of pain. I am wimpy in that way.

Re: Any nurses out here? Injection question
Can you flick the syringe with your finger nail? I used to take lovenox and it would hurt when a bubble went in as well. FYI-it does sting, but no lasting pain if that helps you any. I hope your Mom continues to do well.
