the people that commute spend their money in the city. It contributes to the NYC economy.
If it goes up much more I may consider telecommuting more if my boss will let me. I know that many of my colleagues do that already and can do that more.
If that's the case for a lot of people, commuters will spend less money in the city.
Some may even decide to work someplace else or relocate entirely.
It's crappy service, don't raise my rates and make the product crappier.
Tax me and I may take my money elsewhere.
Someone wrote a letter to the Daily News, pointing out that people will begin spending less to lessen the impact of the tax, possibly causing small businesses to close.

I was thinking that I would probably cut back on spending money on lunch in the city if the commuter tax was re-instated AND transit went up. I do realize that a lot of people wouldn't though.

the MTA is just as bad as Con Ed. these people make so much money, it's not even funny.
-----------------------------------
Ok i take offense to this. Who makes so much money? Not my DH I can tell you that. He has is working without a contract and has not had a raise in over 3 years. He has to kill himself to make a decent living. Now if you are takling about the MTA management then I will agree with you. Right now my DH has at least 5 men in upper management in his garage that do the job 3 men used to do. There is no need for this. The people that run MTA and the transit union don't know what they are doing.

Sorry, but I don't think putting Con Ed on the same page as the MTA is accurate. My father worked his butt off for Con Ed for over 30 years. I have yet to come across anyone who has put more into their job than my father. I've been around Con Ed's ins and outs for many years and while that company has its flaws, it's not nearly as corrupt as the MTA.

I work in the city and I have for the last 10 years. I have seriously cut my NYC spending..maybe by 80%. I know others are doing that too. I go home after work and only go out once every 2 months now in NYC. I take my breakfast and lunch at least 3 days a week and I do not shop in the city anymore.. I buy online, I go to stores locally and I get my nails and hair done locally.
If they raise rates I will have no choice but to cut that 20% even further. I won't be able to afford it.

Re: Any NYC commuters want to talk about the fare hike?
The MTA (subways in particular) has 5 million riders a day. Say they each ride twice a day- to and from work. At $2 a pop, thats $20 million dollars a day. $20 MILLION DOLLARS! EVERY DAY!!! And thats just the subway.
I know they have been losing state funding in recent years, but to me that seems like a LOT of money!

I think they mean 5 million rides per day - not 5 million individual people. They'd have no way to track that. I think that's closer to $10 million per day (uh, still crazy). However, take into account the free rides they give out with certain purchases, plus the discounts for ulimited ride passes, etc.... The math isn't that clear cut. Still a lot of money coming in, though.
I'm also curious what the daily overhead is (salaries, electricity, maintenance, etc., etc.)

honestly, that is neither here nor there.
anyone that operates a business in NYC pays taxes. and there are PLENTY of ways the companies like your firm LOWER their tax burden.
I think *450* a year is completely reasonable for people to pay simply in acknowledgment of how much REFUSE they leave in the city every day.
a little extra for the police and fire dept that PROTECTS them every day.
that is what I am talking about. things that are personal responsibilities outside the confines of the office space.
as to the MTA and it's plans...they suck. especially cutting bus service.
MTA is metro north, lirr, subway. the money they take in every day is STAGGERING. but at the same time, I wouldn't want to open their electric bill every month

Actually it IS relevant because the people living in NYC are not the only ones shouldering the tax burden as the poster I quoted said. And the money companies pay in taxes contributes to all these services provided to everyone in NYC.
ETA - and honestly again I'm on the fence about the commuter tax. I see both sides of it. (And it would be dependent on income, would it not? It wouldn't be $450 for everyone...) It wouldn't stop me from working in the city, but that coupled with the proposed fare hike cause me to seriously cut down on the amount of money I spend in the city.

ITA,
I feel like people who live in the city shouldn't be the only ones shouldering the burden.
Do you realize that the commuter tax is effectively taxing people who come into the city TWICE for the same services they are also paying for at home? Thats what the issue is.. I pay for the trash to be picked up at my house, and the company i work for pays for the trash to be picked up at their NYC location, so why should I, as an employee, be paying for it as well? Its not like its not being paid for. It is. The companies that have their business here are the ones who are paying for those services that everyone says 'we the commuters' are using.
By your logic of 'shouldering the burden', doesn't that mean that every time you leave NYC you should be charged a toll by any other municipality you happen to visit? No, that would be ridiculous.
ETA: i'm not upset because of the amount of money for the commuter tax (it would differ obviously for everyone) i'm arguing against it for the principle of it. I feel its grossly unfair to be taxed twice for the mere fact that my job requires me to be in the city. I pay enough to GET here, i dont' feel i should be paying more to work here too.

I see it differently I guess, mostly b/c I do not believe companies pay EXTRA tax for employees that are NON residents...so their tax burden is the same if they employeed 500 NYC residents or 500 non residents...though I am not *sure* about this...so I will find out.

Actually, Con Ed can't arbitrarily hike up their rates due to strict regulations. Have divisions mismanaged money, sure. My point was that to compare it to eht levels of corruption in the MTA is a bit off. And, my father's role was in a very high level of management, including money management, so I have a pretty good working knowledge of the subject.

then WE ALL get taxed twice. if we are to consider the taxes our employers pay as a "paid in full" receipt for the services rendered to us...then residents should be free and clear of this as well...or should atleast have some sort of tax adjustment to reflect what they pay in personal tax to the city.

I kind of look at the commuter tax this way...if someone was staying in your house 2-3 days a week every single week, would you expect them to kick in a little something towards the overhead? Sure they are paying rent and utilities for their own place but they are still creating a bit of a burden for you. They could stay at their own place but choose to go to your house instead.

Not really. You technically should pay tax on your residence and the services you are using where you work. For people living in the city, it happens to be the same place. So you pay what you owe for your residence and your employer picks up what you owe for your place of employment.
I live in Nassau county, I pay taxes for my services there. My employer pays taxes for the services I use in the city.
Why should I also pay for services I use in the city? When I look at it this way, it doesn't seem fair.

of course no one is being taxed twice. the tax burden a company pays is NOT in any way on "behalf" of the employee for the services used. it's a tax they would pay no matter WHERE their employees came from.
no ones employee is paying ANYTHING to the city for the services you use. I dont' even understand how this idea got started.
my employer pays the same tax burden with ME at the company as it would with you.
I also pay city income tax and property tax and sales tax and lalala tax.
I don't think I am being taxed twice. neither should anyone else.

Currently, I don't feel I am being taxed twice. Adding a commuter tax to me because I live outside of NYC is what would seem like an additional tax.
You and I working for the same company fall under the umbrella of the taxes that company pays. Why am I responsible for additional tax because I go somewhere else at night?
