Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
For mommies that live in these areas, do you like raising your children in this area? We are probably going to focus on these towns when we decide to move from Queens, hopefully within the next 6-12 months. How are the public schools, are there good catholic schools in the area, any family events, mommy and me classes, etc? TIA!

Re: Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
I grew up in RVC and live in Oceanside now, and both areas are great places to raise kids. The public schools are excellent, but if you choose Catholic School, most I know send their kids to St. Agnes Cathedral School. There are plenty of Mommy & Me options around.
RVC has lots of events like parades (St. Patrick's Day, Halloween "Ragamuffin" parade for kids), tree lighting in the Village Green at Christmas, etc. Oceanside has a variety of events too.
Good luck!

So far we love it! We moved here b/c we heard great things about the schools although DD is only 24 mos so we haven't tried them ourselves yet. But ditto the PPs comments about the parades and community events. There lots to do for kids at the Rec Center and the library has super programs for mommy and me too!

I also grew up in the area and think it's all good. I grew up in East Rockaway and went to St. Raymond's and lived for a while in my single life in RVC. Loved RVC.

Re: Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
We moved to Lynbrook before TTC because we knew we wanted our children to go to this school system. Our DS won't be starting school for a while, but I've heard nothing but great things about Lynbrook schools!

Re: Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
We live in Lynbrook and absolutely LOVE IT! We have the most wonderful neighbors and the schools are excellent. Everyone we know around us sends their kids to the public schools here (SD 20 - Lynbrook). There are some small pockets in Lynbrook where you fall into Valley Stream or Malverne schools - just keep your eyes open for that, those houses will be a bit cheaper - we wanted only SD 20 Lynbrook schools. RVC also has a pocket that falls under Oceanside schools - houses are a bit cheaper there. Taxes can be a bit higher in RVC and Lynbrook b/c you have to consider the village taxes...but it is not bad.
Good luck with your search and feel free to FM me if you have any specific questions!

Re: Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
Live in Island Park, next to Oceanside and I like the area. My plan is to hopefully move to E. Rockaway or Lynbrook.
Oceanside is nice but I'm not so crazy about most of the people who live there, just a different culture then I want for my kids.....not bad, just not what I want.

Please don't take offense, I have relatives who live in Oceanside as well, but it just seems the culture of the kids is one of entitlement, and I spend enough time in Oceanside to see that I won't raise my kids that way, with parents who just give their kids whatever they want just to shut them up. It's my own personal observation and not a reflection on the normal people who live there....

Interesting. Not taking offense, it's just I live here and I haven't had that experience. Coming from a more wealthy town (RVC) I think Oceanside is pretty down to earth. Of course it's a big town so you have all kinds, I suppose.

I grew up in East Rockaway and went to the Lynbrook schools, and even then I saw the same thing. Kids expected cars on their 17th birrthdays, brand name clothes, etc... and that was when I was in HS when Gucci, LV and the like were only for the super rich and celebs. I can only imagine its gotten worse over time.
My parents were not like that at all and my sister and I really struggled in that environment.

Re: Any Oceanside/Rockville Centre/Lynbrook mommies
I did extensive research in the area when I was looking (prior to becoming a SAHM this year).
The consensus seems to be Lynbrook SD#20 and Valley Stream (Westwood Section) SD#13 are the most desirable - every agent, every person I have spoke to say the same thing.
That's not to say that the surrounding SD's aren't good too - but those always stuck out as the 'best' when doing research and talking to other people. We considered RVC, Franklin Square, East Rockaway and Oceanside SD's too when looking.
ETA: You should also look into what the community offers as well. For example, I know Lynbrook always had a parade or a HS pep rally going on, Santa came to visit, the firehouse came out for the kids to go for rides, etc ... I loved the 'culture' of the village and the presence of family gatherings.

I lived on the North side of lynbrook with parents who are not wealthy at all. But I had such a beautiful group of people who all came from the "RICH" side of town. They all had the new cars and everything but it never made me feel any different. i guess its different for everyone. all i can say is LYNBROOK IS AMAZING!!

I'm from Lynbrook too...and while I love the town and loved the friends I had, I did think a lot of the HS could be snobby...but I feel that happens everywhere...the school district is excellent and overall a good bunch of kids!

Nooo, please dont tell me this... just this weekend, DH and I decided to focus on RVC for our house search (assuming we want to leave NYC next summer). We LOVE the town so far but this is the LAST thing we want...

Growing up there, this was not my experience. I did not grow up rich by any means and never felt like a pauper or anything. Yes, that was over a decade ago, but half the kids my son went to preschool with are RVC and their families are NOT like that at all. I'm sure there are some there now who are materialistic but most people are not, IMO.
