Any teachers expecting?

What are you going to do about maternity leave? I am hoping to get a sabbatical--it would work out perfectly since I am due in late december.

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I was trying to work up till May and go out for the rest of the year...but I got put on bed rest at 31 weeks in the beginning of March. This is my tenure year...so I can really only take 12 weeks....so unfortunately I will be back in June. Im being induced on Sunday so I'll have 5 weeks with the baby before I have to go back Chat Icon

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I am due Sept 8. I am praying I can go in on Sept 2nd to get my tenure and my days. Then I am taking my sick days until November and going back the first week in Nov. I can't afford to go unpaid!

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I'm due 11/28...I plan to work until the end (I did with my first as well) and then take my 12 weeks FMLA...I'm untenured, so I can't take any more time, but the spring shouldn't be bad with breaks and then the summer...

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I teach Kindergarten in Flushing. I'm due Sept. 25th so I'm finishing out the school year but I'm not going back at all next year. I going to be a SAHM for a while and then I may just watch another baby or two in my home along with my baby for some extra money. I live in Stony Brook so to commute to Flushing every day is brutal and once the baby is here there is NO way I want to deal with 12 hr. days like I have now and all the stress. I just want to be with my baby. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I'm due right before school ends this year. I will try to stay as long as I can this year. I get the summer off and will be taking until at least Feb., maybe all of next year. I'll see how it goes when I have to inform them in Nov. Saving for maternity leave and having good health insurance was the only good thing about how long it took us to have this little one.

Re: Any teachers expecting?

I'm due in mid-December--I'm hoping I can work right up until the Christmas break. I found out that FMLA begins right away--meaning, my 2 week Christmas break would be part of my 12 weeks if I go any earlier... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would like to take the rest of the year off, and that idea is still on the table...but I would only have to go back for the last 2 months, and then I'd get my paid summer, so I'm still thinking about it...

I had dd Nov. 12th. Last year was my tenure year. So I went back in Sept., worked up until my 38th week and I'm taking the rest of the year. If you can do it, I highly recommend it!

are you sure that they count the "vacation" weeks as part of your FMLA weeks? My school district (in Jersey) definitely does NOT- which would be great for your- it's like an additional week of insurance for you.

Every district is different with this. Make sure you check your individual districts and contracts.

I am only aware of this because another of the 5th grade teachers just went out on Maternity Leave this past December, and they counted Christmas break toward her 12 weeks. She wound up not coming back for the rest of the year.

According to a friend of my who actually contacted the department of labor (FMLA) they are not allowed to count school breaks/vacations towards leave time she actually got to stay out longer becasue they ended up not counting December ot February break for her, but maybe it is different for each school/company?? At the time we did not have a union either...good luck!

Re: Any teachers expecting?

Our personnel secretary was very helpful in determining the exact days that would count. Could you find out for sure that way?

Definitely check with the personnel secretary and possibly the person from your union (if you have one) who is in charge of leaves.
