Anybody diagnosed with TMJ? pain caused by it?
I have a co-worker is possibly being diagnosed with TMJ due to extraordinary pain on the side of his face.
for a long time he has had this. Always was told it was sinus. gave him meds. then it was migraines.
Yesterday he goes to dentist. They say "TMJ" take this anti-inflammatory". we didn't believe this diagnosis so an apt with ENT was had today and this doctor said the same thing!
I have NEVER heard of severe pain from TMJ.
Anybody have any experience?
TIA!

I have TMJ but not severely. I tend to get headaches here and there, once I had pain on the inside of my mouth. And at times, my neck will hurt.
There are foods I was told to stay away from....chewing gum, eating bagels.

I actually have it now and it's excruciating at times. It started a few months ago, when my guy returned from Afghanistan (use your imagination, LOL!).
My dentist had a mouth guard custom fitted that I wear at night....I also see a chiropractor for it. Still hurts.
I found a neuro dentist who specializes in this -- I am waiting to hear if my insurance company will approve the "PPO Waiver" since he is not in my network. Even still, I have to meet a $1,000 deductible first. Gotta love health insurance.

I have had severe pain from mine. Its not all the time and usually comes at high stress times etc. I don't grind my teeth but do tend to clench them.
Mouth guard can help but I hated wearing it and I was given muscle relaxers and they made me vomit.
Now I just watch what I eat.

I have it, when it flares up, its bad. I have had head, jaw face pain. When it is that bad i usually get a steroid pack with the anti-inflammatory and that helps along w soft foods and warm saltwater rinses. I have the mouthpiece as well.

Mine can get bad at times. Its awful. I was given muscle relaxes and a PT taught me a trick to "pop" it back into place to relieve the pain. I never chew gum or hard candy b/c it isn't worth the pain.

Same thing! When my DH was in Iraq I was at 10 different doctors before I was diagnosed. I wear a mouth guard during high stress times and I try and watch what I eat. I also never chew gum or eat starbursts anything too chewy causes a reaction. TMJ can be EXTREMELY painful

i was never diagnosed, but i believe i have tmj from grinding my teeth. i stopped wearing my mouth guard. i stopped chewing gum due to other teeth issues and almost never eat bagels. I started eating about 4 bagels a week about a month ago and my jaw lately has been in so much pain. i guess i will cut back on the bagels again.

Ditto.. Extreme pain. They wanted to cut into my face break my jaw bone and file down the pointy area causing my pain. Then they would reattach my jaw and have a plastic surgeon 'fix it up later'. Yeah ... no
I had a night guard, I watch what I eat and chew. I have used heat pads to ease the pain and ice as well as anti-inflammatory.

I have never been in horrible pain but I know some people who have.
Your jaw can just get really tired and sore. That's more what happened to me.
I have been using a bite appliance since I'm 20. I'm 40+ now. I always take it to the dentist when I get a cleaning to make sure it's adjust correctly. That thing has saved me from not being able to open my mouth. In only rare, super super rare occasion I have worn it every night since I got it.
Your co worker needs to do some research. He should immediacy stop: chewing gum, eating sticky candy like taffy or gummy Bears, avoid cheers food like bagels, avoid hard to chew food like steak.
Once he gets it under control he can go back to some of these things. But I can tell you I haven't chewed gum in over 20 years.
When I had a bad flare up I was in Advil to reduce the swelling and was putting ice on my face by the joint.
He needs to get it under control immediately. He has to cut out difficult food for now and he should get a mouth guard if he can stand it. I'll tell you mine is very comfortable and I don't feel or notice it anymore.
Good luck.

Ps. The dentist will probably suggest trying an ice hockey mouth guard to try. I used that for a week untill they ordered me one at the dentist. It's expensive. No way around it. But I feel that guard saved me.
I also went to a chiropractor and he did aboot if manipulation in my mouth as well. I think that helped. But it was 20 years ago.
But the one thing I don't do is chew gum. And I sparingly eat gummy candy, bagels and steak.

Re: Anybody diagnosed with TMJ? pain caused by it?
I have had TMJ for a long time and do have severe pain at times. I get headaches very often and my jaw pops when I yawn. I also get neck pain frequently. I have a mouth guard that I do sleep with at night due to clenching/grinding my teeth, but it isn't helping much. I'm going to a TMJ specialist next month... Hopefully that helps!

Anybody diagnosed with TMJ? pain caused by it?
I have suffered for years with TMJ, and at times my pain has been excruciating. Many times I am driven to tears by the pain. It does tend to come in flare-ups, where I could go several weeks with little to no pain and BAM, its back with a vengeance. Stress is definitely a factor.
About two years ago, the joint in my jaw was so enflamed that I was actually speaking with a lisp. I had to sit at work with ice on my jaw. It was an awful time. I have a night guard from the dentist, and it helps a little bit, but not nearly as much as I'd like.
Tell him to go on Youtube and search for massage techniques to relieve the pressure. This helps me when I am really flaring.
I also have an autoimmune disease and when that is flaring, usually my jaw is too.

I had it. Had pain in my jaw/side of my face. I used to wear a night guard because I would grind my teeth. It hasn't acted up in a long time. But, yeah, I would get headaches from it. Not migraines. I would take Aleve all the time.

Yes! That is where most of my pain starts...if you touch my ear, it is hot/red and if i push on it, that is seriously where the most of my pain is. Not sure if I can explain this, but this is how my exbf, who was a PT taught me to "fix" it. Mine is on my left side.. So i put my finger where my ear lobe meets my face...and move my finger down a half an inch if that...you will feel a dip....that dip is where you have soft/mushy like skin on top of your finger and your jaw starts under that on the bottom...You need to "push" on that dip...really push....it may click, that is good!! It hurts like an SOB for a few seconds, but once you release, the pain releases and is gone.
On a side note, he did this to me at Tangers Outlets once when I was in pain and someone alerted security b/c they thought he was choking me...lol..
If anyone needs more info as to how to do it, feel free to ask, i'm not sure i described it so well here. I also tried the night guard, b/c i grind, but i couldn't sleep with it, so i just deal and use this trick to fix it.

Did the dentist take an x-ray. I had terrible TMJ pain and it was from impacted wisdom teeth.
If it's just TMJ dysfunction a chiro or PT that knows TMJ techniques can help.
