Anyone been to Colonial Williamsburg?
DH and I are looking to take a 5 day vacation in late Oct/early Nov. We were looking to go to Boston but the hotels are very expensive. I saw a commercial yesterday for Colonial Williamsburg and it looks like it would be something DH and I would enjoy.
Looked today at packages and its looks to be running about $700 for the two of us to stay at the Powhatan Resort and it includes the America's Historic Triangle Pass. Anyone ever been? Anyone booked a package or did you plan it on your own?
Any ideas/must-do's while there?
Thanks for all your input!

Anyone been to Colonial Williamsburg?
DH and I loved Williamsburg! There is so much to do. We've been there several times, both us alone and with our kids who loved it also. They learned a lot which made our county's history much more relevant and alive to them, plus got to see all sorts of crafts being done that they never would have otherwise - barrel making, silversmithing, bookbinding, paper making, newspaper print being set, cooking on hearths, animal keeping, blacksmithing, wig making, etc. They got to carry lanterns on the nighttime tours while we all listened to the costumed docent and they loved the militia when it marched through town. Best of all was seeing and hearing the cannon being fired. It was like stepping back in time. We brought back some lantern replicas and enjoy using them outdoors.
I always booked my own way and have stayed in various places. I do suggest that if you can swing it, even for one night, try to stay in the historic area. It will be an experience your family will always remember. There is nothing like hearing hoof beats in the early morning and looking out your window to see a pair of oxen or a carriage go by and people in period costume on the streets. Call directly to see what might be available during your stay. I weaseled my way into the cottage that way after being told nothing was available.
I've stayed in rooms at several inns along the main street and also in a small cottage behind one of the inns that used to be where the slaves lived. It got all of us into conversations about slavery that we never would have had otherwise.
Eat at one of the historic inns at least once, lunch or dinner, just for the experience. The peanut soup made from a colonial era recipe is wonderful! It has a chicken stock base and is lightly peanut flavored.
We have also been to Jamestown where an exact replica of one of the boats which brought over the settlers is docked. It's Tiny! There is also an excellent replica of a native American village with costumed reactors to show how people lived back then. My kids, husband and I loved it.

Wow that's great!! Thanks for all your feedback. In looking online more, I think DH is going to love it. I will take your suggestion about the Inns and see what is available.

I haven't been since I was a teen, but i always had a good time there! If you like amusement parks, I would definitely go to Busch Gardens while you are there!

Re: Anyone been to Colonial Williamsburg?
My whole family goes almost every 2-3 years for the last 15 yrs or so. We always stay at Powhatan. We LOVE it. Try to get a bottom condo if your into hot tubs! The upstairs ones don't have hot tubs. Equally as nice and big though.
Eta: I think you're talking about Powhatan plantation right?
