Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?

I find myself never living in the moment and always thinking hours/days/months ahead. Whether it's an upcoming vacation or the weekend, I can't stop and enjoy a random Tuesday night because I'm always thinking about the future.

Even the little things... like sitting at my desk all day waiting to get home to sit on the couch with DH and veg (perfectly acceptable time to think ahead) but once I get to that couch I start talking about what to have for dinner the next night, or the upcoming weekend, etc.

Does anyone else do this?

Any tips on how to stop and enjoy what you are doing at the moment without thinking 10,000 steps ahead?

I am the same way and I was JUST thinking about this last night.

I feel like I can never enjoy the company I am in because I am thinking of whatever comes next. I look forward to the times when I can see my nieces and nephews but then when they get here, I am always doing something else and often forget to really get on the floor and ENJOY them.

At night, while DH is sitting and watching TV - even if I am physically sitting there, my mind is racing elsewhere - planning, worrying.

I try to tell myself to ENJOY what is going on and I learned how to do this during wedding planning. My cousin would grab me and say THIS IS YOUR BRIDAL SHOWER, THIS IS YOUR DRESS FITTING and force me to take a minute and realize that this is MY life and not someone else's where I am a casual observer.

Even after big events, when I think about them the next day I feel like I wasn't fully THERE.

I am constantly thinking about everything else in my life and how I will get there, fix this, pay for that, etc.. Instead of just enjoying the moment, I tend to rehash things in my head.. I am always thinking.. I drive DH nuts all the time

I have a major problem dealing with this myself. ESPECIALLY after having a baby. My life is just so different now. All I do is worry, & the things that seemed so important pre-pregnancy, mean ziltch now. My sons Christening was a total blur. I'm lucky if I even have 2 good photos from it.

I'm totally like this and I hate it.

I hate being the one planning everything and making sure this is here, that is there. DH offers no help in this department and I need to be better at asking him (or delegating) way ahead of time. When I try to do it all, I don't enjoy the moments.

Since having DD and going back to work, this has become a real problem for me. I have to really FOCUS on it and tell myself to STOP.

Like at night after work, I have 30 minutes to play with her, 30 minutes to feed her, 30 minutes to bathe her and then bedtime. I catch myself worrying the whole time, instead of ENJOYING the time I have with her. I hate itChat Icon

I am totally like this! It has been the one thing I've been focusing on changing for a few months. I always spend so much time thinking/ worrying about what is to come that I feel like I'm missing out on the joys that I have right now. It makes me so sad Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?

I think I'm pretty good with living in the moment. I remember when I was in Junior High & High School i just could not WAIT to graduate & go to College. But then my senior year came and I realized how much being there meant to me. I had soooo many friends and it was just a really fun time in my life (plus going to a strange college where i don't know anybody suddenly began to scare me). So I learned to force myself to stop thinking ahead - worrying or whatever. Just enjoy what you have while you have it, cause chances are you'll never get it ever again. I've tried to live my life like that ever since. I remember while being engaged and still living at home I thought about how one day I'll look back and wish I still had those somewhat 'carefree' days. So even tho I just wanted to be married already, I forced myself to enjoy what I had when I had it, and I'm so grateful that I did. Cause i DO look back now on fun times in my past and sometimes feel sad that I can't revisit it, but it makes me feel better to know that i at least enjoyed it and made it last as long as I could. I daydream as well, but I don't think that keeps me from living in the moment. My daydreams are the dreams I plan on turning into a reality. I look at them as things I will have. I put those positive thoughts out there and wait for them to come back to me in whatever way they will.

I did a lot of work on myself over this last 9 months and I have learned to live in the moment. It's all about catching yourself when you aren't. When you are getting frustrated with something, that may have not even happened yet.. When you are worrying about something. I stop myself, take a breath, ask myself 'what do you need, right now, in this moment', and usually it's nothing. The moment is perfect. I feel better. Just try to catch yourself, and sooner than later you won't have to anymore. I took the dogs for a walk last night with my SO, most amazing night. Cause I was in the moment. Nothing else mattered.

I am so this way - I don't enjoy what I'm doing at the time - I'm just thinking about what's next...

My mom told me one time that she felt bad for me that I couldn't enjoy the now.

I have trouble with this too.
Especially with regard to work, I hate my job so I am always thinking about the next weekend/vacation/day off... that I can't enjoy each day & feel that I'm wishing my days away... it's depressing.

Yes...I'm a huge worrier though.

I worry about the future, obsess over the past, and rarely think about NOW. It doesn't help that I suffer from anxiety alot.

It's something I'm trying to work on and deal with. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I could have written this post word for word. I'm always planning or thinking about what's coming next. It's awful!

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?

im the same way but i take it a step further

its horrible b/c i actually think of the bad things that can happen in the future and wonder when ill get that bad phone call or whatever.

or if i hug my husband ill think- what if this is the last time i see him or if i lay on him, ill think, what if he in not around who will i snuggle with?

i know, im messed up in the head

its so bad. i wish i could just enjoy now...and be happy ot have the nice moments in life, you know?

eta, alot of it stems from the fact that i have a wonderful life. i have a great family , husband that i love to death and a fabulous job. life is really really good. i think just seeing others suffer, i wonder, when will i be punished for having a good life? menwhile my good life cant even be enjoyed becasue i am anticipating bad things...it really just stinks. i wish i could shake that feeling

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?

Being in grad school working on my dissertation, I experience a LOT of this. I hate research and cannot wait to graduate to get a "real job". I can't wait to move to NY and buy a house, start a family. I feel like I haven't started my life yet. But I've been in school 7 years and I am living life. You don't get do overs in life. So I try really hard to enjoy now. I have hobbies, and try to enjoy living so close to DC. And even though I hate research, I have a really cool job. I work with cute birds all day. I try to think of these things and enjoy them. But it is hard and sometimes I find myself only living for the future.

ITA with this... things in my life are SO GOOD right now.. everyone I love is healthy (for the most part), employed (for the most part), Im ridiculously in love with my DH, etc. etc. I can't help but think "There will be a time in the future when things aren't so perfect"... and it totally brings me down. Instead, I know I should just be living in the moment and enjoying the happiness!
