Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?
yes- this is part of the human condition... you might be interested in Buddhist teachings- this has helped me try to stay in the present- which is a lot of what Buddhism is all about.
One of m y favorites is a Buddhist Nun Pena Chodron- I think one of my favorites by her is Getting Unstuck... if you have an iPod, you can download the audio books- they are very affordable- when I used to commute I used to listen to her.
There is another book which I've never read by her titled, "This Moment is the Perfect Teacher"...
Seriously though- do not beat yourself up about this- this is such a totally normal thing- I think, part of the very essence of what it means to be human- to live in the past or the future, but letting the present pass us by.

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?
YES! I have a huge problem with this.
I am more sad now that I have a child that I tend not to live in the moment because I feel like I am not enjoying her the way I should be. Sometimes I literally have to force myself to sit down and ask myself what am I doing??? I have a lot of anxiety and I am always planning the next step or thinking about things that should be happening next. Its actually exhausting.
I want to be able to just enjoy the moment without worrying about whats supposed to happen next but its really hard.

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?
I really "lived in the moment" when, after 20+ years of league bowling, I finally bowled a 300 game. This came on 1-19-03, eight months before our wedding. It was also the third game of an 877 series, a Babylon Lanes house record at the time. I have since bowled 5 more 300's and one more 800.

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?
There is hope for us.
I used to be that way, obsessing over all the things I had to do, what ifs, and felt crazed a lot of the time.
I found a bookmark one day and it really resonated with me. It said:
Tis better to buy a small bouquet And give to your friend this very day, Than a bushel of roses white and red To lay on his coffin after he’s dead.
The lesson is about appreciating the people around you, but it really can reach every part of your life. Have you ever looked back at a time in your life and thought "Wow, those were some good times."? Did you know then just how good they were? Maybe not. Maybe NOW is the good time and you better enjoy it because when you face challenges later, you will have good memories that you can hope to repeat.
Even at family gatherings, I am considered the family photographer and I was always so concerned about getting pictures of the kids, or capturing some moment, that I only got to enjoy them through the lens! I started putting the camera down and going to join the kids playing the game, helping someone put something together, just sitting and chatting.
At work, if I get like this, I lean back in my chair, put my hands behind my head, close my eyes and take deep breaths. I make an effort to clear my head, put some kind of nice soothing memory into it like the beach we went to on our honeymoon, and then continue.
It might only work for a few seconds or minutes, but it works more and more than it used to. I think I'm making progress, and I hope all of you do too.

I am constantly thinking about everything else in my life and how I will get there, fix this, pay for that, etc.. Instead of just enjoying the moment, I tend to rehash things in my head.. I am always thinking.. I drive DH nuts all the time
I'm the same way. DH lives in the moment and wishes that I could be more like him and stop stressing all of the time.
I wonder if it's because men are from mars and women are from venus?

Considering that the idea of death scares me to no end, I live in the moment as much as possible. Morbid, I know. Yet, quite effective!!!

Re: Anyone else have trouble "living in the moment"?
wow, im relieved to see that im SO not alone in this Ive been chalking it up to ADHD (self diagnosed ) because I cant focus on one thought at a time (whole other thread, I know).
and YES about men are from mars ! my husb totally enjoys being in the moment more than I do !
i do try to make a conscious effort to enjoy things more and not worry about the little things. (If I have company, the dishes will pile up, bc I want to enjoy my company!)

Yes..I recommend reading "The Power of Now".
Also, heard this quote from someone: "God, teach me to be where my feet are".
