Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
This is literally what's making me the most nervous - more than labor...the fact that me and DH tend to not get home from the city until 7:15p realistically and I feel like I'm the only one who I ever hear about where both husband and wife work long hours. It stresses me what we're gonna do after I am done with maternity leave, which is 3 months.
We're hoping/confident that each of us can work from home one day per week so it's mostly Tuesday-Thursday that I'm concerned with but wow...everyone I know is either a teacher who gets home at 3:30p, works extremely close to home, or at least 1 parent works extremely close to home, a grandparent is the one baby sitting so time isn't an issue etc etc.
Anyone else in my boat? Would help to not feel like we're alone.

I completely feel for you! I'm in a similar boat. My hours are 10-6 in NYC so I'm typically not walking through my front door til 715. My husband luckily works from home 3 days a week but it still upsets me thinking about what we'll do after maternity leave is over. I don't think he would be able to balance watching the baby and working from home because he's on the phone in meetings practically all 8 hours he works. I have been scouring the internet looking for work from home options for me or at least working closer to home or part time. I know how expensive day care is, i'd really do anything to avoid paying for help 5 days a week. at that rate, we'll be debating if it's worth me working at all (which would obviously be a huge adjustment for my husband and i). we don't live close enough to ffamily to ask them to babysit :(
I totally understand how you feel so know you're not alone!

is there any way you can talk to your boss to see if they can adjust your work hours to let you leave a bit earlier? I know from what I have been researching the latest closing time i've seen for a daycare is at 6:30. Otherwise you could look into a nanny who would stay the hours you need.

Re: Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
Before giving birth, those were my hours - would get home at 7pm. I worked it out with my boss while on maternity leave, so that I come in an hour earlier (used to be 9:30, now I get in about 8:30-8:40), but I get to get home at 6. It makes a BIG difference, especially now that he's 5 months and somehow his schedule has worked out that he's wide awake right when I get home until bed time. Is there anything like that that you can do or negotiate?

I work long hours 5 days a week.
I'm hope earlier, but leave very early (6:15am).
It works. You find a babysitter (or 2) who will do the hours & you pay them for it. It my case, the big perk is that we pay for the time that the kids are asleep too. My mom does help out, part time & emergencies. In your case, you may find someone to do the days you need (it's rough to do that schedule everyday unless you find a live in).
Lots of people I know also have live-ins. It's nice to know the person is there & not rushing to come/go. We may go that route if something happens with our current set up.
Its a bit of a challenge, but lots of people do it!

Have you considered a live in au pair ? You don't have to worry about dropping your child off or picking her up some here. They can do light house work and cooking so you are less burdened when you come home and they are very reasonably priced. I know lots of people who've had a great experience with this.

I have long hours (also home around 715) and have an au pair. One thing to be aware of with long hours and an au pair is that they are limited to 45 hours per week and no more than 10 hours a day. If you are both away from home 10 plus hours per day and don't have kids in school, you would likely also need a part time nanny to cover a few hours. It gets easier when kids are in preschool or elementary because then the au pair can split hours each day, working some in the morning, some in the afternoon /evening. Before that, if you and your husband can work it out so that one goes in late and comes home early, and the other does the opposite, that would also help a lot.

I'm definitely going to approach him about leaving at 5p so I can get the baby by 6:30p when most daycares close (like one of the girls said.)
Hopefully they will comply. I've been here 8 years and I'm one of the top salespeople so they should let me, but because I'm the top he doesn't like me not being here.

Coming from a place of ignorance, because I know nothing about this stuff yet, how could an au pair possibly be affordable? Is that different from a nanny? How'd you find someone you trusted?
Thanks so much in advance for all the help, ladies, as always.

It is around 18000 per year ,so a little more than full time daycare for one/ less than a nanny, but this person lives with you, does light housework and cooking, your child can learn about Another culture etc. You also know your child will have one steady care taker who will give lots of individualized attention.

Go to au pair.com for more info. Full disclosure : I didn't do this myself , but I am basing my knowledge on several people I know who did and had a really positive experience.

I hadn't considered this, as I bucketed this in with a Nanny, which I've heard is more $$ than a daycare. Maybe I am wrong, and will definitely look into this. TIA!

Thank you so much - I will. Appreciate the idea. I'm intrigued that they can do housework too. haha

Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
I work until 630 some nights and DH doesn't get home until after 730. We make it work. I am just not nuts about LO schedule. She goes to bed around 9-9:30. She will sleep through me taking her to sitter and even sleep there for a while when I drop her off. I know some parents put thier little ones down at like 6:30-7. That just doesn't fit our life and its ok. My DD is a happy, healthy, well adjusted kid who will sleep anywhere!

Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
This is basically us too. I can WFH though when needed but I don't have the kind of job that I could simultaneously care for a LO. I dont wrap up till 6 the earliest and when I do go in, I don't get home till after 7 or 8. I figure babies are adaptable and I will just adjust LO schedule accordingly. If we put him down later *hopefully* he will sleep later as well. My mom will primarily watch him. On days she can't we have back up child care support through our jobs. Have you looked into whether your job offers this? I think we have 30 days a year of paid day care or in home care benefits (small co pay required).... I'm hoping I'll be able to WFM those days or ask another relative to pick him up and watch him for an hour or two before we get home. This was the one and only reason we moved back to LI. Having close family around is the only way we could make it work. Day care/nannies are so freaking expensive!!!

Re: Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
My DH and I both work late, typically until at least 7pm. He works in the city, I work 10 minutes from home. We have family who watches DD during the week and my mom is awesome and transports her home for me every day since she gets off of work earlier than I do. If I'm not home in time for DD's dinner, my mom will feed her and entertain her until DH or I get home. Her bed time is typically around 8-8:30 because that's what works best with our schedule.

Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
This was my situation before i decided to leave my job about 9 months ago. Left the house at 7am and didnt return till about 8pm. Also, i traveled to LA twice a month, with my longest work trip being 13 days. After doing this for a year, i gave up and quit. It was very depressing missing my son's firsts. To cope, we hired a full time nanny. It's expensive but worth it. I have cameras streamed to our phones so i always check on what they are doing. She still works for us except im in a different position where i get home at a normal time- 6pm.

Re: Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
You'll figure out a way to make it work. Both DH and I work in the city. Our day care is 7am-6pm. I shifted my hours a half hour earlier and got a JetPack so I can work on the train if I need to do work while I'm mobile. One of us has to leave work by 5pm to pick DS up, but if the other one has to work late, it still works out. Remember, both you and your husband don't have to work on the same schedule. Maybe one can work early and the other late to accommodate drop offs and pick ups.

I'll also add there are other options, too. Like day care all day and then hiring a babysitter to pick your child up and watch him/her the last hour of the day until you or your husband get home. It would likely be less expensive than a full-time nanny. I see babysitters dropping kids off at day care in the mornings, too. You'll make it work!

Re: Anyone else not get home from work until 7:15p?
I can totally relate. I work in the city and don't usually get home until about 7 pm. DH is a teacher and coaches after school, so he gets home later than me on occasion.
Since I'm almost 7 months pregnant, I've shifted my hours to be more of an 8-4 so that I can get DH to drive me to the train in the morning rather than walking - it was just getting to be too much for me. So, now I leave work at 4 and am home by about 5. I hope to be able to keep this up after the baby is here, but our daycare situation is very much up in the air. If we have to get a baby out the door at 7 am, that might be difficult, and I can see it affecting the time I get into work, thereby affecting the time I can leave. I'm just trying to stay positive that we will figure it out and that hopefully we'll have daycare at our house a couple days a week, so there won't be that much of a mad dash out the door. We all have enough to worry about, daycare shouldn't be such a worry! I'm sorry that it is!

Yes me. I work in the city and live in NJ. I usually do not get home until 7:30-8, then I usually work a bit when I get home. Luckily my husband works in NJ and his job is more flexible, he will be picking up and dropping off the baby at day care. We don't have family that lives near by. My family is in Long Island and my husband's family is in south jersey. It's definitely a concern of mine too.

Me! I am 24w3d and I get on the train at 7:20 am and then get off the train at 7:20pm.... I've already requested to work from home for the entire month of April (due 5/11) so I just have to make it through March--I think the subway is the worst part, wayyy to crowded, I sometimes don't get on the first one that comes in because I do not want to be smushed up against someone....hang in there!!!
