Anyone elses newborn cry a lot?

I feel like Bella is crying more than she should. But it's not colicky. She seems to cry a lot and for a long time when she's tired. She refuses to allow herself to fall asleep.

But she doesn't seem to be "happy" when she's awake. It's either she's feeding, sleeping, or crying to go to sleep...never a calm time when she's just awake and alert.

Anyone else going through this, or did? Or is she just not a happy baby?? Chat Icon

We used the 5 S's suggested in this book and it seemed to help. You might want to run out and get it.

Ryan seemed like this in the beginning. Now he's a happy go lucky charmer...it started getting better at 2 months.

Don't worry, it gets better!

Baby G was a crier in the beginning too (well the very earliest beginning), and has some days where all he does is cry. Chat Icon

swaddle
stomach/side
swing
shush
suck

The book explains how to use these 5 things to "recreate" the womb for the baby. It works like a dream.

I read it when I was pregnant but didn't really understand it until I reread it after DS was born.

I recommend it for anyone with a cranky baby.

Re: Anyone elses newborn cry a lot?

Lily is great during the day and cries very little.
But lately, she likes to stay awake and cry from about midnight to 4am. Nothing soothes her until she exhausts herself and falls asleep.

If you haven't tried already, you might want to invest in a sound machine with white noise on it. I would crank that up (or my vacuum CD) when my DD had colic and it really helped her to sleep.

Ditto. My hairdryer works wonders too.

Same here, it helped us a lot! We had a crier too...but don't worry, it gets better...my son is 1 now and such a happy boy! It got better after the first 2 months. :)

ETA: We also used a CD we got at BRU, with white noise on it...we just put on repeat the one sound that seemed to keep him calm.

MY son cried all the time. He could not even go in the car without hysterics. HOwever, in a few months he was the best baby and then toddler...the type you can take to a restaurant with ease. GEt through this time, it gets better.

My daughter LOVED being carried in the bjorn when she was all fussy. And when I did things like wash dishes with that type of sounds she was even happier.

I used this book as well! It was great!

She was still very serious and never really seemed happy until about 5 -6 months. Once she started rolling, sitting she started smiling. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone elses newborn cry a lot?

How old is she? I remember thinking the same thing when he was 2-5 wks old... all he does is cry when he's awake, and he never seems happy!

I'm sure everyone is reassuring you that all newborns cry - its the only behavior they have and it represents so many things, that they will default to it before they learn other cues... now that Cailen is 11 wks old, he will open his eyes and look at me 1st before he thinks crying is necessary, or will give me different cues to let me know what he wants before he cries.... it happens very gradually, but it takes a while to learn this new "other" language - just WAIT until she looks at you and smiles! Your heart will just explode - its like they are thanking you for putting up with all that crying! Chat Icon

ETA - looking at the 5:

swaddle
stomach/side
swing
shush
suck

the only thing Cailen responded too (still) is swinging - I could not swaddle this kid - he would grunt and scream miserably because he needed his hands by his face.... side sleeping he could ony do in his bouncy seat - so that worked too - shushing did nothing and I hate the sound of people shushing - it bothers me! He also would never keep a binky in his mouth long enough and wuold frustrate him....

Like I said - if I still cant get him to sleep, the swing is a gift from God!!! Chat Icon

my mom bought us the dvd of this and it has been a life saver. the doctor demonstrates everything and they offer an hour of white noise.

we put a little transitor radio on static in their cosleeper and it works great!!!!!!

Re: Anyone elses newborn cry a lot?

I highley recommend a sling. Ava was a miserable newborn, granted we didn't know she had such a severe milk allergy at the time and she had reflux, but even so, the sling really, really helped. It cradled her, rather than having her in the upright position of the bjorn, and she loved snuggling up to me as I walked around and did stuff around the house. I used to wear her ALLLLLL day.Chat Icon

She's just over 2 weeks. The crazy thing is she sleeps like a champ throughout the night! We'll go down for 4 hours then up for 1 feeding and a change of diaper and then back down for another 2-3. It's during the day that she's Miss Cranky Pants. We give her Mylicon at every feeding for her gas and that does seem to help, but now I'm thinking maybe it's the reflux Chat Icon

My DD was always fussy and cranky. I think its just her personality right now. There are times where she will not want me to put her down and the only thing that she wants to do is be held, but only while i stand and walk around. I think she is gettng better but she is definitely not the happiest kid. She is 5 months and hopefully it will get better. Im just accepting that being cranky is her personality and that she will grow out of it.

Paige starting getting real fussy around 3 weeks. Its been a rough few months but im sure it will get better. I also call her Cranky pants. LOL
