Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
I posted on the other board but know this one gets more traffic.
Noahs meeting is at the end of the month and I'm very ill prepapred. I dont even know what I need to do to prepare.
We believe he will qualify for Sp/OT/Psych services and half day pre school. but how do I push for these? What do I say or bring? And should I have schools in mind when I go? and is there a list of schools I can look at anywhere?
TIA for ANY and ALL info!

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
I have been to several hundred CPSE meetings....
If you have his reports and scores, and his scores are 2 standard deviations below the mean, then you don't have to really push. He will get services no problem.
The push comes when he is just bordering on 2 standard deviations (1.5, 1.7, etc) and they take out that damn bell curve chart to show you. Then you have to push by saying how his issues affect him at home, with peers, and with overall functioning giving specific examples that will reflect on his functioning educationally....
ETA - Reread your post - the county won't provide half day preschool for you unless it's a program. You will pay for the regular preschool but they will provide the therapy sessions there - unless his needs warrant a program where he will receive services all day (a special ed preschool) which they then will pay for.....

Have you gotten test results back yet? Definitely read them through before the meeting & ask for clarifications, if you need them.

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
If Noah qualifies for a program, they will send packets out to all special ed preschools.
If he qualifies for services to be provided, then you choose the preschool. They will give you a list of providers and agencies, which you will then contact to find the OT, PT speech, etc. on your own.

All evals should be explained to you by the evaluators which will prepare you for the meeting.... They usually let you know based on the scores if he qualifies....

NONE of them went over anything with me. I used one agency for all the eval's ( psych, speech, OT) and got a packet of results/scores.
Liza-I meant SE Pre school yes.
ETA- so I don't need to push for a specific scholl w? the district? The decision would be based on if the school I choose had an opening?

Will all the evaluators be at the meeting? If i need further clarification, should I approach them now or is it ok to ask them there?
Can anyone from EI ( any of his current therapists) come with me?

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
I think all of the evaluators are usually there...if not there may be one main person who will explain evverything. If you have questions before the meeting you can ask the evaluators that way you know what to expect to hear at the meeting. Are you having a parent member or an advocate at the meeting? You can always request one if you are unsure of yourself there. Do you have all of the results from the testing already? I would just check the standard deviations before hand. Good luck!

One of the evaluators come to the meeting, along with his current therapists.
The evaluator calls you before hand and you two discuss the services you are requesting, they pretty much tell you what they are asking for based on the test scores.
The evaluator does most of the talking during the meeting. The therapists give their input, and then you give yours... Basically what you think your son's challenges are.
Then the school makes an offer of services. We didn't have to negotiate with them or anything... They gave what was asked.
That was how our meeting went anyway. We used South Shore Speech in Babylon.

This is almost exactly how it went for us as well. Our DD will be starting in a SE preschool starting in the summer. I went to all the schools and toured them before the meeting and had one picked out before I went. I made sure they had spots available for her to attend in the class size I wanted and the school was called during my meeting and confirmed.
I would go over your test scores with your therapists before you go so you know if he did qualify or not. Your therapists should be able to work with you on what is best for your child going forward and I would go in with a united front just in case you need to fight for extra sessions in some of the areas.
Our school district is great with giving services and our DD scored low so I knew I wouldn't have any issues but we did haggle a bit on how many speech and OT services she would get per week.
Good luck. It's not really that scary once you get into the meeting. For us it was more of a discussion than anyting else.

I'm confused between the term evaluators and therapists .
Ny therapists do you mean his CURRENT EI therapists?
And He had many evaluators, 3 this time.
None of them have called me? Should they have ? Or will they? Should I follow up with that?
His current speech therapist also feels the results of the speech eval wer enot really 100% correct, that she gave him much more credit then she should have .
Can I bring her? ( current speech therapist)

Therapists are the ones that work with Noah and deliver the services. Evaluators usually are the ones you have never seen before literally evaluating Noah's skills. They probably won't really listen to her saying she scored better than she should have though.....
If your therapists want to come you are allowed to invite them. But someone representing the agency should be there to discuss the scores and evaluations even if it's not the actual evaluator (That's what I do many times).
Someone should have called you by now to review all of the evaluations. If not call them so you can advocate appropriately. You do NOT want to go there looking like you are unsure. They will almost always short change you if they know they could. That's how districts work. Squeaky wheels!!!!!

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
when hannah transitioned from ei to cpse, i discussed with the evaluators her performance on her evaluations. also spoke with her ei therapists as far as their recommendations prior to the meeting so i could formulate what i wanted for her the following year.
at the meeting, her ei therapists were present as well as the chairperson, school district personnel etc. i waived the parent member option.
one of the most important aspects that i have learned throoughout as a parent, that the schools main (if not only in some cases)concern is how their performance impacts their learning in school. everything needs to relate back to this. if you only talk about problems you have at home, it will not be enough to get services.
for example, in the beginning of the year hannah would have horrible tantrums in the morning before school. i successfully argued for additional services based on the fact that her tantrums at home caused me to bring her in late (by hours sometimes) and therefore it impacted on her ability to learn and receive services in school.
etd to add: we were given a few options for se preschool and then we visited the programs to see which ones we liked. i highly recommend going to each program. liza has some good resources for evaluating programs if i remember correctly!

Yes, his current EI therapists go. Your SLP should go.
They called me the day of the meeting an hour before. We had evals up until 2 days before though. We rushed everything because my son tested out of EI.
If they have not called you I would call them and touch base. Only one evaluator will go, that's the one you will need to talk to.
What agency did you use if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
I just went throught this myself and the agency I used walked me through EVERYTHING. I had calls from the physcologist, I had input from the EI therapists that come to my home, on how to prepare for the meeting. I had my report the agency sent me with a letter to call them if I had any questions or needed any explanations. I'm so sorry that nobody is preparing you for this but they should be. They should also be suggesting what school is best for dc to go to.
I can tell you that at the meeting they will probably ask you how you think your dc is doing and that's it. The people representing your child from the agency will do all the talking as far as levels he is at etc...they personally didn't ask me anything I just smiled and listened and agreed with everything the agency was telling the school district. they made the decisionr right then and there for me. It was about 1/2 hour to 45 min.

Well a big issue is that the difference between his receptive and expressive language is HUGE.
His receptive age came out at 4 years 6 month level and his expressive came out at liek 1 yr 10 months I think?
SO his averahe language then fell within the norm b/c of the receptive.
What we felt was wrong was the articulation and that part. She wrote he did things he DID not do. I was right there. It wa snot a bad report, it was just a bit wrong on some areas.
IDK...this is so freaking confusing.

One more thing....Do I bring him? HE wont stay with anyone right now , and our Parent trainer said some districts frown upon it and it will also stress him as we are talking about him.
BUT....I thought the fact that he will literlaly have a breakdown right there will add to the need for socialization and continued psych services which we are JUST starting with EI now.

That seems like something she should correct in the report, and discuss with the SLP evaluator before hand. I wouldn't wait until the meeting.

I would call the agency and demand to have someone clarify everything for you before the meeting. At my meeting they had a parental advisor there too. It was someone that just sat there to make sure the right thing was being done for the child. Little surprised about that but nice to have.

It would be incredibly irresponsible for an evaluator to take his "core" language as the true measure- especially with such a significant difference in scores.
IIRC, apraxia is suspected? That alone would cause such a big difference in receptive vs. expressive language.
