Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?

One more thing....Do I bring him? HE wont stay with anyone right now , and our Parent trainer said some districts frown upon it and it will also stress him as we are talking about him.
BUT....I thought the fact that he will literlaly have a breakdown right there will add to the need for socialization and continued psych services which we are JUST starting with EI now.
I have to be honest- I really don't like having children I've assessed in a meeting. It just feels "wrong" to talk about their weaknesses in front of them, even when it's those weaknesses that get them the services they need. Especially at Noah's age where they totally understand that they arte being talked about.

They can absolutely go but I was told by the phycologist not to as they will be talking about him and at that age then can understand some of the negative that is being said and she just (her opinion) not such a good thing to do. I didn't bring my child.

Well a big issue is that the difference between his receptive and expressive language is HUGE.
His receptive age came out at 4 years 6 month level and his expressive came out at liek 1 yr 10 months I think?
SO his averahe language then fell within the norm b/c of the receptive.
What we felt was wrong was the articulation and that part. She wrote he did things he DID not do. I was right there. It wa snot a bad report, it was just a bit wrong on some areas.
IDK...this is so freaking confusing.
It would be incredibly irresponsible for an evaluator to take his "core" language as the true measure- especially with such a significant difference in scores.
IIRC, apraxia is suspected? That alone would cause such a big difference in receptive vs. expressive language.
No, as of recently, his SLP actually said that the difference means a true delay.
AHHH, I hate all this!

That seems like something she should correct in the report, and discuss with the SLP evaluator before hand. I wouldn't wait until the meeting.
When is your meeting?
it is the 23rd. The O/T evaluator actually wrote in her report...that she discussed the results with me on 3/15. I dont knwo WHO she discussed the results with, but it WASNT me

He'd qualify for speech with that much of a discrepency, regardless of why there's a discrepency. There is definitely a delay in expressive language if his receptive is that high.

AHHH, I hate all this! That type of discrepancy usually gets services - you should probably be ok!

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
Hey Donna, I have been on both sides of the table. Speaking specifically from my experience on your side of the table, I would do a few things here:
I would call the evaluators (the ones who did the testing for cpse) and speak especially to the one with erroneous information in the report and insist that she change the report to reflect an accurate account of what really took place BEFORE the meeting and have a corrected version to bring with you. If she doesn't comply, I would speak to her supervisor and demand it. That's me though and I believe in the school of.....if you don't advocate for your kid....who will? kwim
Next, I would invite any therapists (EI) currently working with Noah who you feel would help advocate for him to the meeting, especially if you have a team leader. This is who came to our meeting with us.
Then, your EI service coordinator should've given you a list of all the schools/programs available to your child in and around your area. I would look into them yourself before the meeting if there's time and see which one's you like/don't like. We basically secured a spot for our son in a school by mid March and then confirmed after our meeting in April. They told me had I not spoke/met with them in March, that spot would've been gone by April. I'm not saying that's the case with all schools....but better to get a jump start on checking them out.
I did not bring my son to the meeting, although I did bring a picture of him. I wanted to put a face to the name and 'humanize' the conversation (because really, the district just sees what they see on paper). I felt like others said....I didn't want to talk about him, right in front of him and also, I wanted to give this meeting 150% of my focus and attention and that definitely wouldn't have happened if Jack was there.
Finally, BREATHE!!! If your son NEEDS the services, he will most likely get them. Districts are not out to screw anyone. It WILL become their problem later on if it's not taken care of now and they know it. If you're on the borderline for anything, fight for it. Most times they will give you what you want (in my experience). Good luck and if you ever need anything, I'm just an FM away

Re: Anyone familair with how CPSE meetings work?
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the advice.
The reason things are so confusing, is all along Noahs main and almost only issue was a speech delay , now we are having addtional issues not easily diagnosed and of course starting right as we transition.
