Is your co-insurance 10%? If so, it's 10% of what the insurance pays the hospital, not 10% of what the hospital bills the insurance (which is always much more than your insurance pays).

I honestly don't know-- I need to ask more questions. I am just going on the write up provided by DH's HR.

I didn't deliver there, but I'll tell you how it worked with my insurance. I had a vaginal birth at Stony Brook. The dr. billed them $4,200 for just the delivery. The insurance (Oxford) paid them $1598.29. I had a 20% co-insurance so my portion was $257.04. The hospital stay was $12,756.75, the insurance paid $3,693.25 leaving my portion at $651.75. I can't find my anesthesioligst bill, but that was around $4k also.
So see, they charge the co-insurance (or co-pay) on the amount the insurance pays, not what they bill. My written policy actually didn't say I had a co-insurance so I ended up appealing my bills and paid nothing out of pocket.
ETA, that doesn't include the nursery stay or ped. charges in the hospital. That bill was about half of my hospital stay bill IIRC.
