Anyone familiar with the laws regarding pumping at work?

I know that employers are required to provide a space for pumping/nursing moms that is not a bathroom, but are there more specifics beyond that? The room at my job that was used for pumping was just converted to a small lunch room so it is not allowed to be used for pumping anymore. The space that has now been designated for pumping has no lock on the door, and has a window on the door with no shade- not exactly private. Is this acceptable?

I believe NY law is a lock on the door, chair & table at the minimum. I'm sorry you're dealing with this!

I'm sure they will add a lock to the door and add some blinds for you.

When I gave birth, they put a lock on my office door and added blinds. We had a transparent office environment so most people did not have blinds in their office. It was a bit embarassing when I did pump because EVERYONE would know what I was doing. Whenever anyone passed my office, they would notice and comment on the blinds if they were down. Eventually people knew what I was doing and did not comment. I worked with all guys. It was awkward to say the least.

I'd love to know if the room has to have a lock! The room at my job is also where people (I think maybe exclusively women) keep their coats and some supplies are kept. I have been walked in on (again, only by women but STILL) numerous times. The only protection I'm offered is a sign on the door warning people that someone is inside pumping. Somehow people don't even notice it half the time. I even had one lady know I was in there and come in anyway (without me saying ok) becuase she needed to get something and apparently couldn't wait 5 minutes.Chat Icon Chat Icon

It SHOULD have a lock if not you will need to use a sign

J. For the purposes of this provision: “Private” shall mean that the room or other
location shall not be open to other individuals frequenting the business, whether as
employees, customers, or other members of the public. To insure privacy, the room or
location should have a door equipped with a functional lock. If a door with a functional
lock is not available (in the case of a fully enclosed cubicle) as a last resort an employer
must utilize a sign advising the room or location is in use and not accessible to other
employees or the public.

The Affordable Care Act also has pumping requirements: http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs73.htm#.UM9iROTAdc0
They are very similar to NY.
The door should have a lock, but if not you need a sign.

Wow how rude. I think I would drag the chair in front of the door and sit in it so no one could open the door. I would be so anxious the whole time with just a sign.
