Anyone get pregnant the first year in a PhD program
Was it doable for you? Do you know anyone who has done it? The PhD is in education. Thanks.

Re: Anyone get pregnant the first year in a PhD program
Funny you posted this.... i am thining of enrolling in an Ed.D. or Ph.D. program. I am not pregnant yet, but i think i am just going to wait. school can always wait, IMO. i'd rather the msot time with the baby and go back to school later. (I don't have to have the degree for what i do, so it's not mandatory, which if it is for you, that changes things)

Re: Anyone get pregnant the first year in a PhD program
Sorry to crash...I'm in an Ed.D. program now, but I waited to get pregnant until after the cert exam. It's tough balancing a baby, school, and work. (DS is 4 months old now.) I'm glad I waited TTC until after the cert exam because I needed to focus my energy on school. Now that I'm ABD, I can take my time with my research and have no pressures of doing classwork- all while taking care of DS. FM me if you have any questions or want to talk!
ETA: If you really want TTC, go for it! Professors are very understanding since grad students have a lot going on in their personal lives! I chose to wait an extra year TTC, but not everyone does.

Re: Anyone get pregnant the first year in a PhD program
I finished my PhD before TTC. It is doable while PG, but I can't imagine it would be easy. It's also doable with a baby, but I would not want to give up that time with the baby, especially if you are also working full time. I worked full time and spent every night and weekend doing work and writing my dissertation. I wouldn't have been able to devote any time to a baby. I have an incredibly supportive DH who would have helped out with a baby, but I wouldn't have wanted to feel like I gave up spending time with them when they were babies to go to school.
I'd either finish it before TTC, or wait until the baby is a bit older and in school. JMO--feel free to FM me with any questions about the workload!

See this makes a HUGE difference. school will be like your job, but you can do it at home and not have to worry about day care except the nights you have class. i think everyone else would have to balance working, school and baby and personally, i think that's too much.

Re: Anyone get pregnant the first year in a PhD program
Yeah, luckily my husband makes enough that we would be able to manage a couple or few years with me not working. Even after the baby is a couple of years old, I plan on going back to school--full time. Once I can manage/balance or find my rhythm, maybe I can work part time.
Of course all of this could change depending upon my health, the pregnancy etc (knock on wood)
I guess its hope for the best, plan for the worst?
It seems like females have some tougher decisions to make, doesn't it?
