Anyone going to try it natural?

I am going to try my best to do it without an epi---but I am not completely opposed to it. Anyone that is trying this as well, are you doing anything to prepare? Thanks!

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

I tried to go natural, I was doing fine until nurses MADE me LIE down and I was having back labor. Lying down made the pain 100x worse.

I made it to 4cm's then got my epi.

I read Bradley Method book.

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

I tried Hypnobirthing with back labor for almost 12 hours and had an epi andhour before I delivered. If I had realized how dialted I was I may have been able to go without it. I had a great experience anyway! I was just a little disappointed. I am going to try to not get one if I am blessed to be pregnant again!

I recommend hypnobirthing and the Bradley Method.

There are things to make you more comfortable during labor. I used swaying back and forth because I couldn't lay in the bed with back labor. The excercise ball takes some of the pressure of too or a warm bath. I also had my husband rub my back when I got a contraction.

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

Honestly, at the rate everybody else is going, I don't think I would even attempt. I have no tolerance to pain anyway.

And from everybody I heard, lots of people who try ended BEGGING for an epi if labor is too long.

But you can try it! Good luck! Some people had great experiences and went all natural.

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

I'm planning on going natural. We took Bradley Method classes and I've read the Hypnobirthing book.

I'm open minded, I realize anything can happen.

But I'm going for it 100%! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

OK the question is if you are going to TRY - not if you don't think you can do it. Those who don't want to, we know all about it.

I am hoping to go naturally. There is no reason in my mind that women cannot do this provided everything is OK. I read Hypnobirthing the Mongan Method and Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I took a Natural Childbirthing class. I want to be prepared, and do my best. I use my birthing ball every night and sit lotus position for a time as well. I have been going for acupuncture and chirporactic treatments.

What I don't think is that you can walk into L&D totally unprepared and expect to have a natural childbirth. Sometimes it happens just because the labor goes so quickly, which is what I am hoping for, but you do need to prepare yourself beforehand.

I will not go to the hospital until I am having contractions every 5 minutes for 2 hours straight - in the hospital you are way too restricted. This was my OB's recommendation. I'll have a doula as well who will know when and what to do, and my sister who is an RN will be with me too.

Of course, I may have to be induced if I am not on time in which case a lot of this goes out the window.

Do not let naysayers get you down.

I agree with not rushing to the hospital..unless my water breaks ( and Im high risk due to high amniotic fluid)..Iw ill be HOME until I cant take it any longer b/c those l & D beds when your strapped on to monitors etc are NOT comfortable and you cannot move...etc....

that makes it easier to go naturally b/c the hardest part is over by the time you get there....

Most that I knwo that did this, arrived at the hospital 6-8 cm's dilated already ( some choose epi's..some didnt)... But then those who I have seen go early to the Hospital or induced seem to get epis at like 3-4 cm's dialted....b/c the pain IMO is WORSE when your at the hospital in a freaking plastic bed with an IV and two monitors and straps etc on you.

I waited until my DH thought I would have the baby on our new carpet! I arrived at 3-4 after being in the same kind of pain from 9pm the night before. I didn't get an IV until about an hour and half until I delivered. I got to the hospital at 8am and had my son at 1:25pm. Winthrop was really good about following my wishes!

I'm really not sure. I am taking a class next week that should help me decide what I'd like to *try* to do. To be honest, I am expecting that natural childbirth may not work for me, because I don't "relax" well. (I've never been able to meditate, concentrate on breathing, do yoga, any of that sort of thing. Unfortunately.) Still, I plan to go to this class with an open mind and see what I can learn.

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

I am going to try to go natural. I would rather do most of the labor at home and don't plan on going to the hospital until my contractions are at 5 minutes apart or my water breaks. I hate hospitals and I would rather spend the least time there as possible. Of course this is what I plan on doing....who knows how I will feel once my labor starts but I am going to try my best to go natural. Of course there are naysayers but I'm going to try my best. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone but myself so I'm really not concerned with what other people think.Chat Icon

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

I do have a concern that I'll get to the hospital too early - I've got about a 45 minute drive - and they'll force me into the bed and give me an epi. So I intend on being VERY clear that I'd like to be up and about until I absolutely need to be in that bed. And that I would much prefer to go without an epi!
We'll see what happens!

It's your body and your decision -- just make sure your Dr. knows what you want/don't want beforehand. I had him sign a copy of my birthing plan so it is right in my file in case anyone wants me to do what is best for them as opposed to what is best for me and baby.

Im afraid to brooch this subject with my Dr. But I think I will need to. a signed birth plan etc.

I am oppossed to being stuck on the monitors. I dont see why 20 minutes an hour is not enough. At Winthrop they seemed to freak out if your baby monitor fell off which it does if you so much as sit up. I DO NOT want to labor that way ( sorry to the O/P...this is getting off topic).....But these are good concerns/suggestions too for how to go naturally if its your choice I think.

I was wondering if anyone made up a birthing plan - they say to in all of the books....but I wasn't sure if I'd look like a total nerd walking in with one! Chat Icon

I have already told my doctor that I'm hoping to go without an epi. He looked at me like I was crazy (as has everyone else who I've told that) but he agreed that in some cases you can do without it - and just reminded me not to be a martyr!

Re: Anyone going to try it natural?

Thank you ladies for your responses. I have a question about the birthing ball? Are these available at the hospitals, or do you have to bring your own. Also, I want to be allowed to walk around during my contractions---I think that will help more than lying in bed. I am going to southside. Does anyone know if you are allowed to do this here, or if they hook you right up to the monitors???

I made one!! I gave it to my OBGYN and it's in my file, they went over eveything with me and complied.

Yesterday DH and I went to the maternity ward, sat down with the nurse manager and went over my birth plan with her too. She took a copy and put it in my file. So...
