Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long. ADDED ANOTHER QUESTION.
At about 2 weeks old my son started getting colicky...he's 4 weeks today. It usually starts at about 11:00 at night and he screams until about 4:00 in the morning. The only time he doesn't cry is when he's eating. Last night was the worst yet. He started around 11:00...cried until 12:30...fell asleep until 1:30. He then woke up and cried until 4:30...was quiet until 5:00...cried until 6:00 then started to fall asleep. Every time I put him down he started crying again...I finally got him to sleep out of my arms at 7:45.
I try everything I can think of. I try the swing...the bouncy chair...the stroller. I hold him in every position possible. I try sitting with him...laying down with him...walking with him. I tried the noise of a hair dryer...I run the water. Nothing seems to work. I really can't take it anymore...last night I cried all night...I literally wanted to put my head through the wall.
We tried changing formulas. I even tried Nutramigen a few days ago. He hated it...he screamed during the entire feeding which he has never ever done before. The hospital put him on Similac Soy because he was so gassy and fussy but it seemed to make him worse so now he's on Similac Sensitive. He also will only drink the RTF formula...he gags and chokes on the powdered form.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I don't know how i'm going to deal with this for a few months. I am absolutely misserable once night time comes.
ETA...I have always tried all of these things throughout the night until he goes to sleep. Last night I finally gave up trying after a few hours and just sat in bed holding him as he screamed. Is that okay or should I keep trying different things until he falls asleep?

Re: Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long.
We went through that starting at week 2 as well.
Did you read Happiest Baby on the Block?
The techniques there were the ONLY thing that worked for us after a couple weeks of crying right along with him
I can give you a quick synopsis if you want.

This is my only suggestion too. Are you swaddling him? I would watch this DVD if you haven't already.
I'm sorry - that sounds horrible

You can get the DVD at BBB or BRU - it's only about 20-30 minutes and very helpful. Ryan isn't colicky but gets fussy at night and DH & I feel a little bit more confident handling him with the tools from this video.

Christopher was Colicky and had reflux. The Nutramigen did help a lot. We also used Gripe water in his bottles as well. I remember those nights holding him till 2-3 am trying to console him. The swing did help. Have you tries holding him facing outwards and bopping him up and down?? Also is what REALLy helped us was running the vacuum cleaner..I guess that is why he likes it so much now

Also, do you have a sleep sheep? These sounds are helpful in soothing DC.

Chelsea did this starting at 3 weeks. We found that the only thing that worked was a white noise machine. i bought it at Brookstone and it is a life saver. Even now that she has stopped with the Colick we still use it sometime to put her to sleep.

I do try to swaddle him but I might not give it long enough. When he cries his arms go crazy. When I swaddle him he seems to cry more and fight to get his arms out so I take him out. Do you think I should just keep him in it longer.

This is what the MD on the Happiest Baby on the Block explains. He says swaddling itself doesn't soothe them but they need to be swaddled in order for the other techniques to work. Maybe get a miracle blanket if you're having trouble keeping him swaddled?

I tried the Gripe Water...not religiously though because I also use Mylicon. Facing him out and bopping up and down is the best position for Rylan also...but only works for a minute or two.

I saw them at BBB last week so I'd imagine BRU carries them as well.

Like I said, Ryan isn't colicky so I can't imagine what this is like but I'd imagine you need to keep trying rocking or swinging or singing or something.

Re: Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long. ADDED ANOTHER QUESTION.
BRU does NOT have the miracle blanket.
First I am so sorry that you are going through this and your DS as well. With the swaddling, try holding out longer, DS still fights his swaddle at 4.5 months old! Some nights when I swaddling him, he goes nuts fighting and I just try to hold him firm and then basically within a few minutes he wears himself out and is fine. You will know if he is not going to calm down. The swaddling may help with putting him down as well! DS cannot be put down unless he is swaddled becase his arms wake him up.
Also the vacuum is a life saver! DS isnt colic but he isnt a good napper either and now if he is tired I run the vacuum and he falls asleep.

Re: Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long. ADDED ANOTHER QUESTION.
Oh honey, I am sorry. This is so hard. My little guy was colicky too, though he had the graciousness to do his screaming starting late afternoon, until about 10 or 11. Then he would sleep (mostly) through the night.
First, I would call his pediatrican and get him checked out to make sure he doesn't have a health issue such as food allergies or reflux. Digestion often is a problem for colicky babies, so he may be having some trouble with food, even with the sensitvie formula. I would ask about that.
As others have said, read through The Happiest Baby on the Block. One point he makes is that you may need ot combine techniques, swaddle, rock, shh, all at once to get much effect. These things helped DS, though at times he still screamed. I also think he gets overstimulated a little more easily than some babies, and getting him up in his room, playing quiet classical music or putting on a white noise machine, helped him at times too. We noticed the TV seemed to make him worse at times.
Driving him around the neighborhood helped too. Have you tried this?
Also, at times it sounds terrible, but I couldn't take the screaming one more second, and I would just put DS down and walk away to another part of the house. I felt bad, but really, nothing I was doing helped him. I would calm down, and usually think of something I hadn't tried for him. I think if we're really frazzled, they sense that, and it makes things worse. So I'm not saying neglect your baby, but walk away for a few minutes if you need to and calm yourself--hearing them scream is so upsetting.
In DSs case, he just had to grow out of it. Around 4 months he barely did this anymore, not at 4.5 months, he really doesn't scream for no reason at all. Good luck! I hope it stops sooner for you.

First off, tons of
My son had colic for about 4-6 weeks, and it was possibly the hardest thing I've ever been through.
It sounds like you've been changing formula a lot - does your doc know about the formula changes? B/c sometimes it takes more than a few days to tell if a new formula is right for your baby. If you change too frequently, you're not giving him time to adjust, then you start the cycle all over again.
Like a previous poster said, have your doc rule out reflux.
Then, if it's not the formula and not reflux, my only recommendation is to just hold him. Hold him, and rock him and sing gently. My son sometimes stopped crying if I stood in front of the kitchen sink with the water on full force. Swaddling worked for us, but only for about the first few weeks home, then he wasn't having it.
You need to get out of the house, or have someone else come in and watch your son while you sleep. Is there anyone nearby who can come over for a few hours at night while he is colicky?

I'm trying to find a new ped...I don't really get any advice about the colic...just that most likely no matter what I do he will be like this for 3-5 months. I'm always the one to have to ask what I can do and which formulas to try.
I'm def getting that DVD today...I pray it helps. I thought about driving around but haven't gone that route yet...I think i'll try tonight.

I did always ask the doctor about the formula changes. They did tell me it would take about 2 weeks to see if there was a change but I only gave the Gentlease and Nutramigen 1 bottle each. He couldn't/wouldn't drink it. They said I can try Good Start but i've been reluctant to try something new again.
My boyfriends sister lives next door but while I know she would help in a second I can't ask her...she has two kids herself. She offers to help all of the time but I wouldn't be able to listen to him cry in someone elses arms.

Re: Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long. ADDED ANOTHER QUESTION.
I just started giving DS a bit of camomile tea at night. It seems to have helped him. It helps w sleeping, calming their stomach muscles & pooping issues (I dont think you had that problem).
I have used everything mentioned in prevoius posts. This was the only new thing I can add to maybe help.

I actually read this in Parents magazine the other night and tried it. I put 2 ounces in a bottle and he drank maybe 3/4 of an ounce...he didn't like it and gagged a little because it's to thin. He actually was a little better that night but thought it was a coincidence. I didn't try it again because he didn't like it and gagged. Maybe I should try again.

Re: Anyone have a colicky baby? I need help...very long. ADDED ANOTHER QUESTION.
Ds has reflux, so I put rice in his bottles, which thickens it a bit.
The first time I gave it to him, he definitly noticed a difference, but since I only put about an ounce of the tea in w his bottles, I just add a "pinch" more of the rice & He seemed fine with it.
Im not saying to add rice, but maybe if you spread the ounce of tea out over the course of two or three bottles, he may not notice the difference in consistency & he would still get the benefits of it. I don't know, but worth a shot.
I completely understand you get to a point where you will try ANYTHING
I should add...I put the tea in with his formula. Not sure if I made that clear in my post sorry

Oh yes, I forgot about the tea! We gave this to DS now and then, really more for poop issues than colick, but it did seem to help him. Still do sometimes since his poop is not regular.
He wouldn't drink it straight either. Mix an ounce in his formula. If he takes that, try two ounces. Or put an ounce in two bottles. That's all his doctor told us to give him anyway.
Also, I would ask your boyfriend's sister to help if you really get desperate. Is she home during the day? Maybe she can watch DC for a couple hours so you can sleep! Seriously, I would help someone out with their baby if I could.
