Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

I am not sure if this is the reason, or if it's just a male dog thing, in general.

Ozzie is not neutered b/c DH plans to breed him someday in the next couple of years. Recently, I have been noticing that after he's been laying in a spot for awhile, there will be a wet spot under him. At first, we thought it was drool b/c we'd find it after he'd gotten up so we assumed his face was there and he was drooling in his sleep. Plus, it doesn't have an odor like urine would. Well, last night, he was laying on the couch next to me for hours. He was in a very deep sleep. When he did move, I noticed a big wet spot under him, and it was no where near his face, if you know what I mean!!! The weird thing is, I still don't think it's urine b/c it has no odor! I know this sounds gross, but could it be semen? I feel like that would have an odor, too, but maybe I am wrong...

I have never had a male dog before so this is all new to me! I also don't know how to get these stains out of the couch! I am so disgusted!!! Advice, anyone?

I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you...except that it's a REALLY good idea to get your dog neutered. There are already so many homeless dogs looking for homes out there, I can't imagine why you would want to contribute to the problem...

Sorry if my answer seems a little harsh, but it's how I feel. And it'll solve the problem with the wet spots, too. Chat Icon

I have to agree. It is best for your dog's health to have him neutered, not to mention the reason Beth mentioned above.

And to answer your question - yes, it is probably semen.

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

Our dog isn't neutered but that's only because I read about the medical reasons and many agree that you should wait until a dog has stopped growing to do it. For us that means about six months from now.

Not to be gross but besides semen, there is something called penile sheath discharge. It's kind of the lubrication between the penis and the outer wall. If you smelled the spot, you would probably know if that was it. I've heard it smells rank. Usually it's not an issue if the dog licks himself periodically.

I'm not sure how many replies you will get on this topic because most people here have had their dogs fixed for a variety of reasons. It's a touchy subject, to boot. If you do a search of the Pets board, you'll see why. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

Ebony wasn't fixed until he was older and he used to have wet dreams. Yes, I would watch him sleep, he'd start jerking his legs and then bam....all over our white marble floors.

So I bet that is what it is.

As far as neutering, unless your DH is a breeder, he shouldn't be bred and therefore should be neutered. Scout is going in next week. We only held off because his breeder had said she wanted to stud him for her kennel but as we haven't heard any moreon this, we are moving forward with the procedure.

Unless you are a professional breeder, you should not be doing this. I can send you tons of stuff on backyard breeding and the horrific things that can happen to the puppies. Get the dog fixed.

Neutering also help prevents cancer in males too.

Spay/neuter today.

PS I can recommend low cost places.

Your probably shocked with these responses, But please consider it.. I mean no disrespect, but if you do research on this before you consider it you really will see how unnecessary it is... I know this is not the question you asked but please at least look into this..

I believe it is semen by the way.. But I am not an expert.. Chat Icon

Same here.... Our 8 month old larger breed dog won't be neutered for at least another 8 months or so due to many studies on how neutering at an early age can cause abnormal bone growth and lead to an increase in joint issues and ligament tears.

It sounds like it is penile discharge. Can you tell if it has a color at all to it?? It might be just normal discharge or it could be a sign of infection underneath the sheath..... Keep on eye on it and if you notice a strange odor, excessive licking, any reddness, urinary problems or a color to the discharge I would call the vet.

As for cleaning up, I would just use normal fabric/carpet cleaner.

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

Wow... sorry if I offended people by mentioning my dog was not neutered. He will be 10 years old in January so he is not a puppy himself. My DH wants one of Ozzie's pups when he finally does pass away. Sorry if there are many of you out there who don't like that idea.

Can someone explain to me why this is such a crisis? I honestly asked an innocent question b/c I didn't know any better...

It's not a crisis. I think people just want you to understand that 1) not nutering your dog is not healthy for the dog itself. and 2) if you are not a licensed breeder and decide to breed your dog there are a number of problems that could occur because of your lack of knowledge. Your DH wants ONE of Ozzie's pups... but what will he do with the rest of the puppies? KWIM? No flames, I think people are just trying to give you a different perspective, albeit off-topic, but still helpful.

As for the "wet spot"... I have no idea! I would call a vet and ask them.

If he is 10 years old & it is just happening now, I would definately call the vet and ask him.

My male dog is neutered, Ive never seen any wet spots like that so I don't think it's a male thing.

Thank you for explaining... I didn't know it was unhealthy - do you know why it is? Just curious! Also, if we do have a few pups, of course we would either give them to our friends/family who want dogs, or sell them, or something. We would never just put them out on the street or something to become strays. I'll talk to DH about it, but he's wanted to do this ever since he's had Oz, so I doubt I'll convince him of anything. Thanks for clarifying though :)

First, by getting dogs nuetered, you can eliminate the risk of testicular cancer.

But Oz being 10 years old, he might be too old to breed anyway. Again, before you do anything, I would call your vet...ask about the wet spots and ask about breeding him.

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

If the dog is 10 and this is something new, you need to call the vet. It could be any of the things others mentioned, but if this is something new, it could also be a sign of something far more serious.

Also, 10 years old is old for many dogs -- likely too old to breed for most.

Maybe YOUR dog not being neutered isn't a "crisis," but irresponsible breeding and overpopulation of dogs in this country IS a crisis, a very serious one. A lot of posters on this board take this very seriously and when they see what they feel is irresponsible behavior, they speak up. I have to say, most were not unkind to you - but stated their positions, as they are free to do.

With so many unwanted dogs in this country already, people don't like to see anyone breeding who isn't experienced, knowledgeable, and working only to better the breed. Anything else is just compounding the already bad overpopulation problem.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but just want you to know where people are coming from...

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

Is this something that just started? If it is take him to the vet.. I also believe 10yrs old is too old to neuter and breed..

There are so many puppy pit bulls that are in shelters that dont have homes.. Take a look at this..

Overpopulation

This just breaks my heart.. I think this is where some of us are coming from.. There are just too many unwanted pets.. Most peoplee have good intentions at first then it turns into somethig else..

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

A few weeks ago I talked my friend into neutering her pit. Her DH also wanted to have an offspring from their dog.

I told her that 60% of the dogs in shelters are pits or pit mixes. She is now taking her dog to get fixed. He's 2.

Also in her neighborhood she knows of some people who fight pitties. That's what could happen to the rest of the puppies if no one adopts them.

I agree with many of the posters here. Take your dog to the vet and get the problem looked at. I hope he's ok and lives a long and healthy life. Seriously though if DH wants a pit puppy, there are thousands out there that need homes.

Re: Anyone have a male dog NOT neutered?

Obviously a vet would be the best option here, since (I don't think) any of us are vets...they can also discuss whether neutering at this point is the right move (if thats what you are thinking of).

I hope you find out whats going on with your boy! Keep us posted as I am sure everyone is really hoping he is OK first and foremost.

Take the dog to the vet.

Look at related posts regarding Back Yard Breeders and PMs.

Pit mixes are overwhelmingly found in shelters (kill and no-kill alike) and like any breed should only be bred by responsible, educated and experienced/licensed breeders.

Hope Oz feels better soon.Chat Icon

Non-neutered dogs are at a much higher risk for illnesses such as cancers.

Regarding having one of Oz's puppies, I do understand the sentiment, but unless you are trained in evaluating the breeding/heritage of Oz's possible mate, there is a great chance that the dogs bred will not be of the desired outcome. Even if you *know* of another Pit that has a good temperament, if you do not know how to evaluate (or even have attainable information regarding) the dog's lineage, the resulting pups could be, quite frankly, poor quality dogs. I don't mean that in a show dog sense, I mean it in an everyday temerament, health and longevity sense. It is incredibly important to have all testing, lineage and selection information for several generations before choosing a breeding pair. Hence why so many responses on here may have come across as harsh or off-topic.

Please feel free to FM if you have any more questions.Chat Icon
