I have one similar. I like it. I like making fresh veggies and it makes it easy to cook them. It can be annoying to clean.
I wouldn't say it is necessary.

I just bought one a few weeks ago, the reason I bought it was that although I use a stove top steamer pan usually, if you want to steam a whole bunch of veggies at the same time, its nice to have. If its cheap and you have room...why not get one. I use it for a Sunday roast when I make steamed brocolli, sprouts and sweet potatoes. I like it.

Mmmm, I'm thinking it wouldn't be bad since it's only about $20. I too have the stove top one, but this also does rice I think too. Thanks!

I do not have one like that.
But we love our steamer. We use it for cooking our vegetables.
