anyone have hot air heat?
what are your experiences??
i hear it can very dry, i also hear you can get a humidifier to put in the system so it is not so dry...any idea how much this costs?
also, any idea how much it costs or if it's possible to add an extra heating zone with hot air heat?

Re: anyone have hot air heat?
We have forced air heat and CAC. The heat can be dry. A whole house humidifier, though, isn't terribly expensive to install and makes it MUCH better. (I think friends of ours had one installed a few years ago for about $500 - 600.)
We don't have a whole house humidifier yet. Our first winter in the house, I used a humidifier in our bedroom. This year, I haven't used it at all (and haven't felt that it is as dry as I used to think it was). I'm not sure if that's just my perception, though.
It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, and with a whole house humidifier, I think it would be great.
We only have 1 zone, but I'm pretty sure you can have multiple zones with forced air heat. I don't have any idea on cost, though.

We have forced air heat. I like it.
I have never felt like the house was dry. I find that once the heat kicks on, the house heats up IMMEDIATELY. It is really nice.
I don't really have anything negative to say about it.

Re: anyone have hot air heat?
I have forced hot air and I hate it only because it is soooo dry. We were going to add a humidifier to the system ($300-$500) but we are now moving. We have humidifiers in the bedrooms. Good thing is that is does make the house toasty warm, no noise or odor.

Re: anyone have hot air heat?
We have a hydronic system. The air is heated, but not "cooked" (as the installer said). Many hot air heaters have an open flame (for gas), or heating elements (electric). That method evaporates all the moisture. With a hydronic system, it is similar to a radiator. Pipes with hot water heat the air as it passes over them. This keeps the moisture content the same as with radiators or baseboard heaters.

Re: anyone have hot air heat?
We have forced air and I am not a fan. I feel that it heats unevenly and our system is completely new. We do have a humidifier but I still find that it's pretty drying. It does heat up the area quickly, but be careful not to put a vent directly above a bed or a chair because it will blow directly on to your head. And I hate hearing it turn on and off. You do get used to it, but it's very annoying.

Sorry to hear about your setup. In our case, we didn't have any of those problems. I've found that it heats the house more evenly than the baseboard heating we used to have. I think because it forces the air around better, giving more circulation and better heat distribution. We aren't any drier (and I think we're less dry than with the baseboards, since neither DW nor DS have had skin issues this winter). With the diffusers we have, we haven't noticed air blowing on us from the ceiling mounted vents.
The blower DOES take some getting used to..... You really only notice it at the air intakes, though, not the heating vents.
