Anyone have to give their DC neb treatments daily for a long period of time?
I'm just looking for some advice ds has been on the neb daily since sep and now we have to do 2 separate meds twice a day. He gets so mad because it takes so long and he cant do anything till they are both done. He will be on the neb daily till the end of the winter and I'm just dreading it. Is their anything you do to make it easier or fun for your dc?

How old is your DC?
We have been giving my daughter the nebulizer since she was 9 months old. She ended up in the ER at 5am when she was 9mo old with her first "Unofficial" asthma attack. By the time she was 3 she had had enough attacks that she was officially diagnosed with asthma.
We started using Pulmicort daily when she was about 11 months old. Back then she recieved it twice a day...morning and night before bed. Now that she is a bit older and her asthma is more under control she gets it once a day before bed.
In the beginning it was so hard. When she was under a hear old it was hard to get her to sit still for it. We had a Blues Clues DVD that we'd show her that would work sometimes. Othertimes I'd give her a sheet of stickers and while I gave her the neb I'd let her stick them all over my face! I have the pictures to prove it, lol! It was rough! But we got through it.
It does get easier. Now she is 6 years old. I can pour the medicine in and set her up on the couch and she can give herself the neb while I prepare dinner ro do other things around the house. She's pretty much an expert at it now. She knows when she needs it at school and asks to go to the nurse and takes it there as well once in a while.
Hang in there. The pulmicort which is what she takes daily no matter what in the neb has done such wonders for her asthma. And I am thankful that when she has an attack her body responds very well to the other treatments.
If you have any questions please FM me or let me know!

My DS who is 22 months gets Flovent twice a day and will probably be on it till at least March. We use an inhaler with a spacer. He needs to take 6 breaths through the space for one puff and he gets two puffs each session. Usually takes a about a minute and we have been using this method since he was 7 months old. We choice the spacer verus the neb treatment because it was quicker even when he would cry and we had to hold him down, it was really quick. Could that be an option for you? We also use the spacer if we have to give him albuterol.

We do Albuterol in the morning and Saline at bedtime. My ds has low muscle tone so we do this through the winter months to prevent an infection from settling in his chest.
The albuterol makes him crazy wired so if we have to do a second dose- during a cold- I give it right when he wakes up from his nap and is still sleepy.
I let him pick a DVR'd show or DVD to watch and he will watch the show while I am nebulizing him. Once in a while I put him in the high chair so that he can't get away from me because the albuterol makes him really hyper.

We nebulize our 14 month old with saline 2-3 times a day he has nothing in his chest but his peds said it would hlp alleviate his congestion. He has a perpetual post nasal drip and it helps him a lot. Sadly, its like I am putting him through a medieval torture device every time we do it. He has low muscle tone too so its hard for him to cough things up.

Thank you! He's almost 3 and up until now he only used an inhaler with a spacer but since he's gotten worse we were introduced to the neb. Hes on pulmicort daily along with singular but since the weather has been so up and down he can't get rid of the cough and wheezing. So because of that he's on xopenex 2x a day and pulmicort 2x a day. I have tried letting him color, play with my phone, watch a movie but no matter what he wants to be free and run and it takes like 30-45 mins to finish both treatments. He usually great with orally taking meds since he's been on a beta blocker daily since he was 3weeks old but this neb thing he hates. I'm just at a loss because I have a long road ahead of me.

We used to use the inhaler with the spacer but his RAD is now asthma and his pedi feels that the neb is more effective because if his chest is tight its harder to inhale therefore making the inhaler less effective but thank you for the suggestion.

Re: Anyone have to give their DC neb treatments daily for a long period of time?
Have you looked into getting a portable nebulizer? My DH had one when I first met him (he is severely asthmatic) and it was just to take on camping trips and vacas and stuff like that, but when DD was young we used it with her also (until it broke!) anyway, it is very small...about the size of an inhaler with spacer ... but...since it's battery operated you aren't tied down. We used to sit on the floor and play with DD while she used it. We didn't use it ALL the time but sometimes it was a lifesaver.
As far as spacers --- my DD is 6 and JUST got her first inhaler with spacer. Our pediatrician said that even with a spacer, it is hard for young kids younger then 5-6 years of age to really get accurate dosing with inhalers/spacers. The spacers help ... but the nebulizer my doc still feels are the best bet.

Re: Anyone have to give their DC neb treatments daily for a long period of time?
my son, no, but my baby brother yes, for years.
it's very difficult but we just tried to make sure he had as many entertaining things to do as possible while he was forced to sit there.
video games, while I hate them, became his thing. made the whole experience much more tolerable for him.
for me, when your child has to go through such discomfort, all bets are off. whatever makes it the least painful for them both physically and emotionally is what gets done. tv...video games..me dancing around like a fairy
whatever it takes.
it's very sad to watch as a parent/caregiver.
