Re: Anyone here secretly hoping for....
I just started saying I am.....I have a son already and am now having all these problems with pregnancy. I always wanted 3 kids and HIGHLY doubt i'll be going thru this again...its too painful this time around. I even told my DH...lets have twins. I thought he'd pass out, but he didn't. He just said lets just concentrate on having one right now and if we get 2 we'll be doubly blessed.

Yes! Because I am an identical twin!
Very cool :) My mom is a twin, but she and my aunt are fraternal. Identical twins aren't hereditary, but fraternal twins run on the mother's side to any daughters/granddaughters.
I've always wondered if I would have twins because of this. My aunt's daughter has 3 kids, no twins. I'm the only other girl so who knows! It's one of those things that sounds very exciting and also very scary to me!

Re: Anyone here secretly hoping for....
For my first pregnancy I was and did get preggo with twins (through IVF), but lost one. After having one I have NO idea how I would handle twins!! So this time around I definately only want one

Re: Anyone here secretly hoping for....
Yes!! But one would be just as nice too my father has always said that I was going to have twins-we have some in the family. Now we're about to do our first IVF cycle and it would be nice to have twins. But Like I said I'll take what I can get as long as it's a healthy baby

Re: Anyone here secretly hoping for....
I could never handle twins. I think that i secretly wanted them before i have one but now i know that it would set me over the edge. as i tested negative this morning though i was thinking i will take anything i can get - and i would be happy even if i got pregnant with twins knowing ahead of time that i can't handle it!

im not so sure about the identical twins not being hereditary thing I am an identical twin, so is my maternal grandfather. DH's maternal grandfather is a twin also ... I think our chances are pretty good!! As far as I know, they are hereditary or at least the percentage increases when they run in your family.

You know, I always thought any kind of twins was hereditary, but studies show that identical twins are a fluke of nature (in a good way!) that isn't actually passed down. However, I ALWAYS hear of a family that has a number of identical twins, so I personally think it does run in families, but "they" haven't been able to determine how.
The fraternal twin thing they know for sure is passed down because it happens when a woman releases 2 eggs and they both fertilize.
I find it all fascinating and think twins are such a cool thing for some reason.

You are correct... I am a twin mommy (babies are 6 weeks old). Identical twins are a "freak of Nature". No medical explanation for why a fertilized egg splits into two. Fraternal twins on the other hand are genetic from the Mother's side. A women needs to release 2 eggs and have them BOTH fertilized. So... if fraternal twins run on the fathers side, it makes no impact on the chance of conceiving twins.

Re: Anyone here secretly hoping for....
i wouldn't "mind" twins per se but i am not hoping for them. one baby is a lot of work, and while two would be a blessing, if i had my choice i'd prefer a singleton.
ETA: but i don't know if i feel this way b/c i already have one...
