Anyone keep an older car in addition to a new one?
I am on a roll with the car stuff today!
I have a 2003 Ford Focus. It's starting to have problems every other month or so. We want to get a new car. BUT, I also drive a ton for work across LI and back sometimes. The car gets GREAT mileage and it costs me only like $30.00 a week to fill up.
I am debating just keeping the putt-putt and using it for work in addition to getting a new car and just driving it into the ground. (I want to get the new car because this one is starting to make me feel nervous with unreliability).
Financially do you think this makes sense? DH feels we should try to trade the Focus in or sell it why we can still get at least a couple of thousand for it. Thoughts?

We do - DH's "station" car is a 2002 Honda Accord and I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue.

you have to see if the insurance is worth it. If the car is already paid off, I would say keep it and drop your collision coverage.

This is what we did. Granted, at the time, we only had one car, so we still only had 2 cars after that...

Yeah, it's been paid off for years now. This is what FIL recommended.
DH and I are often out all day as well (he has his own truck for work) so I like the fact that there'd also always be a car in the driveway.

that's a really good point. When we had an "extra" car, we always wound up needing it or lending it out to friends or family. So, it could be good and/or bad depending on your situation. It was fine for us.

I know plenty of people who have 3 cars with only 2 drivers for various reasons.
I would see what they would give you for a trade in. It might be worth it. THey gave me mroe than I expected on mine and it had some issues without a doubt!
Plus if its unreliable do you want to be driving all over LI and possibly get stuck when you have a reliable car sitting at home?

We have an 05 matrix which is our good car. We just bought a 2000 Hyundai Sonata just to have a 2nd car / trainstation car. We live in PA so we really need a 2nd car now that we have a baby.
I would totally keep the 03 focus. Its always good in a pinch to have that second car.

Re: Anyone keep an older car in addition to a new one?
We have 3 cars.
1988 BMW M5 - This is DH's "fun" car that he only drives on weekends or by himself because we don't have car seats in it and I don't know how to drive manual.
1999 Honda Civic - this was my car before DH and I got together. It has been paid off since 2003 . DH uses this as his primary car that he takes to work. Great gas mileage! We do have car seats in this car in case the kids need to go in here, but this is not the primary kid car.
2005 Dodge Magnum - this is our primary family car. I have been working from home so I take the kids to daycare in it and we use it for most family drives when we go anywhere.
