Like if you had a ranch and wanted to put a full top on the house? Assume 3BR/1BA

It depends what size top and how many. The modules come in certain sizes so if you can maximize their use you will get more for your money. We looked into it for our house and would have needed two modules but decided against it since our house was a little tricky to expand (architecturally speaking). I really didn't find the modulars to be much cheaper than regular construction but it doesn't take as long to complete the work. And your house also has to be accessible for those huge truck with cranes to bring the modules in and lift them on top of your house. So, if you are down a small, winding road or have power lines in front of your house you may not be able to do it.
