All westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed at Exit 59 in Ronkonkoma shortly before 6 p.m. after a motorist was struck by a Suffolk County deputy sheriff's car, officials said.
CPR was being performed on the motorist during transportation to a hospital, a sheriff's department spokesman said. The sheriff was also taken to a hospital, but his condition was not believed to be serious.
The accident appears to have taken place after the motorist's vehicle was stopped in a traffic lane, and the motorist may have exited the vehicle, according to Chief of Staff Michael P. Sharkey of the sheriff's department.
Sheriffs were not immediately able to provide additional details.

OMG.
I just read on Newsday it was teen who was hit and they died. Posted 18 mins ago. OMG. So sad. I just saw on the news, the teen's car got sideswiped and it forced him into the HOV lane. He then got out of the car to wait for help. The sheriff's vision was compromised by the sun and when he swerved he struck the teen.

Here is the latest from Newsday. We heard all the helicopters and sirens from the house last night. So so terrible....his poor family.
A Suffolk County deputy sheriff's car patrolling the Long Island Expressway struck and killed an 18-year-old Wednesday in Ronkonkoma after the teenager stopped his car in the high-occupancy lane and got out of the vehicle, officials said.
The deputy sheriff was traveling west near Exit 59 at 5:49 p.m., officials said, and his vision was compromised by glare from the setting sun.
Michael Sharkey, chief of staff for the Sheriff's Office, said, "There was sun glare and our deputy attempted to avoid the vehicle, and the operator was in the road."
CPR was performed on the teenager, William Schettino of Blue Point, while he was being taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead there a short time later. The deputy sheriff, whose name was not released, was also taken to a hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be serious, Sharkey said.
All westbound lanes were closed immediately after the accident at Exit 59 and remained closed past 11 p.m. to facilitate the police investigation.
A man who said he was Schettino's grandfather said in a phone interview that Schettino had a mishap before being hit by the deputy sheriff and ended up on the HOV lane.
"He was sideswiped and driven into the HOV lane," he said. "He couldn't get out of the driver's side so he got out of the passenger's side, after he put his lights on, after he contacted the police department."
Sharkey said yesterday that it is not known why the car, a 2011 Mazda, was stopped in the HOV lane, or why the driver decided to leave the vehicle.
"I would like to stress to people that if something happens to their car, and they're not able to move it out of the roadway, the safest thing to do is stay in the car with your seat belt on and call 911," Sharkey said. "Obviously, if you can get it out of the roadway, you should."

This breaks my heart!!!! I commute three hours each day and sadly, I see this ALL THE TIME! I'm not blaming this kid by any means but as a precaution to anyone reading this, if you get into a fender bender or some accident where you can still maneuver your vehicle, PLEASE GET OFF THE ROAD!!! I see it all the time, people get into a fender bender on the highway and they stop their vehicles in the middle of traffic and get out to inspect minor damage. I can't stress enough how dangerous this is. This poor young man and his family. My prayers go out to them.

My sister was stuck in this for hours with the baby and as i was trying to find out infor for her we found out after it was done it was my sons friend. :(
I was told through people in town he called his family n told them he got into a accident they were on their way to the scene to help him because he was sideswiped. i am thinking maybe he got out to make himself visible to them? I just dk.
One thing that I cannot understand is isn't it odd for a person to be stopped in the hov lane? I would think a cop would specifcally slow down and stop to help a broken down vehicle in this lane.If the sun is so bad at that time then noone at all should be drivng too fast over there. Im just thinking out loud, not placing blame.
Anyhow..I thought I would share what a good soul this child was. my friend had a exchange person and her camera got stolen. william took it upon himself to collect money and present her with a new camera the day of the prom. He taught alot of the kids to skateboard, including my son. He also stuck up for alot of kids. I feel cheated, I would to have loved to meet this child my son knew I hope he rests in peace.

Wow really sad newsday said he was very talented! My prayers are with his family right now!!! Like I said when DH came home last night it must of just happened because they saw them doing CPR on him!! He was so shaken by the time he got home!! Today we made sure we kissed and hugged each other alittle tighter!! So sad

I have seen people STOPPED for whatever reason, in the HOV lane. I always think, OMG, so dangerous. I have even gone as far as to drive all the way over (while looking of course!) to the right lane b/c I could tell that the stopped car in the HOV lane is going to cause an accident. My thought is...I drive in the HOV lane sometimes and parts of the HOV lane comes up out of nowhere, like sort of over a hill where you can't see beyond where you are. I know a few places on the LIE< what lies beyond in the HOV lane isn't able to be seen beforehand, kwim?
I have been driving and saw someone stopped and I said, someone is going to fly right into that car b/c you can't see it from a distance based on the way the road is. So that's my suspicion.I have seen cars stopped and thought, OMG< no one in the HOV lane is going to see tha car until they are practically right behind it (which is what sounds like what the deputy did).
My heart breaks for that family. His mother was driving there to help him, he called.

OMG- sun glare is the worst.
It is basically like driving blind.
Yesterday I was heading back to my house after dropping DD off at daycare and the glare was so bad that I actually pulled over on my block because I could NOT SEE AT ALL and I was freaking out.
Scary.
So tragic.

DH is a cop and he says that whenever he pulls up to a minor accident the first thing he asks the drivers is- "is your car driveable?" The second they say yes, he says - "then move it OUT OF THE ROAD"
It is sooo dangerous to just leave your car where you were hit- and then mill about outside of it as you wait for help.
Not to mention it causes massive traffic backups.
He says 9 times out of 10 then will respond with- "but I thought you had to see exactly how the cars landed for the report" The answer to that is "no- we can tell what happened by your account of it and the damage to the cars- always pull your car off the road if you can"

this. I tell people the same thing. Unless its a crime scene, get your car to a safe location. I passed the accident as well yesterday. How tragic for that boys family, and my heart goes out to the sherriff.
