Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
How bad is it? What do you do with your coats?
We are considering knocking down the closet to make more room in our small 4th bedroom.
Thanks!

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
The coat closet in our house had been converted to shelves which we use for cleaning supplies. We have a coat tree near the front door but it's just me and DH, no kids, so the coats are minimal and we have additional space for off-season coats in one of the guest bedrooms.

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
thats so funny that you bring this up-
we put a portico on the front of our house, and we decided to center the front door so that the front of the house would be symmetrical - which meant on the inside, we got rid of our coat closet. my mother almost had a heart attack. i had to remind her that while a coat closet is nice for guests, we never were able to use it for guests because we had our stuff crammed in it- a hundred pairs of shoes we couldnt find, suitcases, coats, jackets etc. guests coats etc (like on the holidays) wound up in a heap on my parents' bed.
i wish i could give you input, but we are not living there yet, so i havent gotten a chance to try it out. what i plan to do is to put one of those (knockoff) pottery barn bench and hook thing behind the door
i definitely think you can make it work! just make sure you have space on a bed to throw everyone's jackets :)

Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
I lived without one until I bought a house. Honestly .. I hated it. We used a coat rack and I shiver when I see them. If you don't mind them, then it may not bother you. My current coat closet has coats, and other on the go items.
I like farm bench idea. Or you could do a decorative multi hook.
I entertain a LoT and use closet so much for Guests in winter and putting guest coats on my bed skeeves me for some reason. Nothing goes on my bed.

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
we don't and it's fine we put our extras in an extra closet upstairs (we don't use the upstairs at all otherwise)
however, with our long term plans for the house we will add one, really just because i want a better place to store our vacuum/steam mop/etc.

Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
We didn't have one in our apt, so we used the closet in our office. I'm not a fan of coat trees or hooks unless it's in an area you can't see. They always look messy to me. Btwn DH and I we probably have 10 jackets/coats and I'm not sure where I would store them if we didn't have a coat closet.

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
We have 2/3's of a coat closet.... I wish it was a full closet (the top is cut off cause we live in a split and my bedroom closet protrudes into the coat closet on the top). It would be much better if it was a normal size, but i could not live without it!

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
we dont have one....it was converted into a storage closet by the previous owners and it also has the AC duct through it....I hate it. But we put up a row of hooks and that is where we hang our coats as well as our guests coats.
works for now....

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
oh geez not the responses I was hoping for!!!
Right now the closet takes up alot of the 4th bedroom making it a weird shape.
We do have a linen closet which we don't have towels/linens in. I was thinking of re arranging things a little and removing some shelves so you could hang some coats in there as well as store the vacumm ect. Also each kid will have a hook on the back of their door for their coat/backpack.
We don't have room for the farm bench with storage and I am afraid a coat rack/hook will look messy!
Uhhhh decisions small/weird shaped 4th bedroom or no coat closet?

Re: Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
We don't right now but will in the future. The coat closet will be where DD's nursery closet is now. DD's nursery will be the formal dining room when DD moves upstairs. For now we use a coat rack behind the door and I hate it. We have too many coats and add DH's hats (SERIOUSLY one on every hook ) to the mix and it just looks so sloppy. I can't wait to have a coat closet!!!

What do you use the 4th bedroom for? If you have no room for a farm bench storage, I would keep my coat closet!! With little kids and multiple coats, hats, gloves, etc a coat hook will always look messy

Anyone NOT have a coat closet?
When we moved in we had no coat closet. I thought it was odd that they had boat cleats hanging on the wall until after we closed and I went to hang up my coat. Those cleats were perfect for hanging a bag and coat! We opted to lose a small 4th bedroom to add a coat closet (among other things) so my vote would be the smaller bedroom to keep the clsoet.
