Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
We barely use our home phone, so we thought to finally get rid of it.
Are there any drawbacks?
The only thing I can think of is solicitors using my cell phone number.

We haven't had a home phone for almost 8 years.
You can register your cell phone on the do not call list, same as a house phone.
The only negative is when your cell loses charge and you can't find it.
I don't miss it and I think its a total waste of money for us and our lifestyle.

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
What about the ease of calling 911 always having a landline? And the fact that they can locate you? Or a child having access to call in an emergency, vs looking for a cell phone>? KWIM?

The 911 is a good point!
For us it's a combination of saving money since we dont use & there are times it goes out, & out alarm is tied to it (we want it tied to our cell phones for monitoring)

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
I have a house phone and honestly no one ever call us at home. Everyone calls us on our cellphones. DH insist on having the phone though for emergency purposes so thats why I still have it around.
I'm on the do not call list but it can't block certain organizations from calling.

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
Not for anything, but I also think it depends on your "plan". We never use our home phone and called to cancel and they told us that it would cost us more monthly to cancel phone b/c it was part of the phone/internet/cable bundle we had signed up for. Maybe check with your carrier to see if you really have the option to save money by cutting it.

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
I haven't had a home phone in 9 years. I have NEVER had any issues. My DH did have to call 911 one time and it wasn't that much of a hassle. When DH and I bought our house DH wanted a home phone so we got one, no one called so we got rid of it. We were spending $35 for a phone we didn't use. It's not worth it for us.

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
We moved and it was hard for us to get a phone and internet in our neighborhood. For 6 months we had just our cell phones. We had to up our minutes for more phone calls. I was always a little worried about the 911 situation especially since we have a toddler. What if we had a babysitter and she needed to reach us or call 911. When we were finally able to get internet the package it was cheaper if we also had a phone because of bundle discounts.

we tried to remove our home phone from our Cable bundle and it actually cost MORE without the home phone so it likely wont save you money, or at least nothing substantial

You can set up your alarm so that it doesn't work like this. It's an extra monthly charge and extra initial charge to install the box but, IMO it is WELL worth it. I mean, what is the point of an alarm if a burglar can just cut the phone line b/f entering your home? We have it set up to run on our home line and a wireless connection - however, the wireless connection does not run through our cell phones - it is set up through the alarm company. That way, if the phone line is cut or goes out - the wireless sends the signal to the monitoring station as well. Personally, I wouldn't want my alarm just tied to my cell either - what if it runs out of batteries, isn't getting good service or isn't working?
HTH!

Re: Anyone not have a Home phone? Drawbacks?
I havent had a home phone in 3 years.
When we bought our house, we had one installed. For the 1st 3 weeks I got telemarketing calls morning, noon and night. No one I knew called us on it. I cancelled it in less than a month.
The downfall - My old Blackberry broke on me constantly. DH deploys for months at a time and I was so uncomfortable living in my home without a phone waiting on my new phone to ship out to me (esp while I was preggo).
Now that my grandmother watches DS in my home and tends to forget her cell phone, I am uncomfortable not having a home phone. I want to be able to check in on them and I want her to always have a phone on her.
Instead of hooking up a land line, I will be adding an additional cell phone to my Verizon wireless account which will not leave the house. It will be out "home" phone for basically no additional cost.
