anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
i don't like tipping in general. i know that it's expected, but IMO, unless you went above and beyond, you're not getting a tip - that is just ME (this does not apply to people who LIVE on their tips, ie. restaurant servers. i tip those employees well - i know how hard they work).
my mailman delivers my mail every day like he/she gets paid to do. i have never even seen him/her. am i "obligated" to feel guilty because i choose not to tip them?

You are NOT obligated to tip your mailman or garbage men. Period.
If you want to, go ahead, but I don't think it's expected or necessary.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
I'm not. I live in a newer development where we don't have mailboxes at the door. They're all together in a big metal box at the end of the block. The guy doesn't come to our door, ever, because even packages get put in a special compartment in the metal thing. Because the whole system is so impersonal, I don't feel obligated to tip someone I've never met.

My BIL is a mailman so I feel like I have to. Just knowing my BIL and SIL rely on that as extra income for the kids... But in general I don't think people should feel obligated.

I agree... In our case the sanitation workers picked up a lot of trash when we moved in. I should have paid for a roll-off. They also return my cans to the side of the house neatly where they belong and give us extra trash bags. IMO it's well worth it.

Same here, my cousin is a mailman. They do rely on the extra money.
Plus I feel in general, they are delivering your mail in the hottest, coldest, worst weather!

We just bought the house and are actually moving in about 2 week so I think I am going to tip our new mailman....he has been really nice so far and know not to deliver me any junk mail yet since we don't live there (I wish he would do the same with the bills though!!).

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
I don't plan on tipping my mailman. I always get the wrong mail in my box and have to re-deliver to my neighbors. (at least once a week)
like mentioned, that is his job. he didn't go above and beyond his normal course of employment. I don't get tips from parents when their students do good.
JMO
ETA my BIL and FIL are also postal workers.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
this has never been an issue for me up until now- I alway slived in buildings where the mail was sorted by a building worker (who I tipped)
but so far I am not super impressed even though my name is on my box- I have my mail in other peoples boxes (-4 family house)
but I am debating tipping my express bus driver- he goes above and beyond to get us home quick

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
Last year our mail person went out of her way all the time for us. This year, different girl and she complains if I leave more than a couple of letters in the box to take in(no one in CA actually uses the blue boxes, our mail men just pick up our mail) and sometimes "forgets" to drop off or pick up mail.
Plus, I am a city employee and no one ever tips me!

I'm not... Living in a condo complex, I pass by when they are here sometimes, and it's always a different postal worker.
If it was the same person.... then maybe I would.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
We haven't in the past and I don't expect we will this year. We have the majority of our mail delivered to a PO box, and what little does come to the house is delivered by a guy in a truck who just rides up and sticks it in. Rarely any boxes so he's got it light and easy for us.

How do you leave the garbage man a tip? We don't see them! I'm not tipping my maillady because my mail comes at all different times, and sometimes she leaves outgoing mail behind!!!

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
Nope no way. And I am not tipping my garbage or recycling guys.. Shocking I know. I seriously feel like this all so stupid. They have salaries and they are not so bad either. I tip people who make mostly or only tips.. waitresses and hairdressers etc but not people who have a salary and excellent benifits from the county or government.. puh lease. Maybe I will start tipping when just one student of mine brings me a gift.. LOL.. Not common to get gifts AT ALL in my distict.

LOL my mailman leaves them all over the street.. Maybe that is because I don't tip him.. But I shouldn't have to tip them to get my pails on the grass or in my driveway.

No I don't. My mail carrier has knack of not ringing my bell when something needs signing & so I have to go to the post office for it.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?
As I said regarding the garbagemen - I do tip the mailman (not money, but a gift card) because he/she always puts my boxes out of sight and out of the weather and he likes my dog!
Besides, even though they do get a good salary - a tip is appreciated especially at the holidays. And I think that if you do tip, you get better service.
Also, the poster who said they tip the hairdresser but not the mailman...hairdressers make a good salary also, why tip them if it's based on salary?

I feel the same way..well minus the student part I thought I read that govt. employees aren't allowed to accept monetary gifts anyway. I cannot believe someone posted that their relative RELIES on the tip each year. Don't mail carriers make a pretty decent salary with a ton of days off and awesome benefits?
