Nope no way. And I am not tipping my garbage or recycling guys.. Shocking I know. I seriously feel like this all so stupid. They have salaries and they are not so bad either. I tip people who make mostly or only tips.. waitresses and hairdressers etc but not people who have a salary and excellent benifits from the county or government.. puh lease. Maybe I will start tipping when just one student of mine brings me a gift.. LOL.. Not common to get gifts AT ALL in my distict.

ITA! Until I start getting tipped or get any gifts at all from my students' parents (ha ha), I don't see why I should tip government employees who are making a pretty good salary and benefits. I expect decent service from my mailman and the garbage collectors because that's their job!

No, tip--he's a moron.

In fact, he should tip me for going upstairs & redistributing everyone's magazines. Chat Icon

I had never even heard of this until last year...and I still didn't tip the mailwoman - she doesn't have to walk from house to house...she drives from mailbox to mailbox at the end of our driveways. Are they even supposed to accept tips?

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?

We are tipping the mail lady where we live. She is very nice. However, I own a business and I do not tip my mail carrier there. He's rude. It ***** because I have gotten to know his colleagues who work inside the post office and I like them. I wonder if the ******* tells them that I do not tip him. Last year I brought a candy basket for the people inside the post office.

I do, but only because I have the nicest mailman ever! If its raining or snowing he brings the mail to the door, if he sees me getting out of my car with packages he helps me. He is just an all around nice guy so we tip him

My BIL is a mailman so I feel like I have to. Just knowing my BIL and SIL rely on that as extra income for the kids... But in general I don't think people should feel obligated.

Same here, my cousin is a mailman. They do rely on the extra money.

Plus I feel in general, they are delivering your mail in the hottest, coldest, worst weather!

but this is their job and they agree to the terms when accepting the position. they do make a salary and the extra money should be viewed as a bonus and a surprise and not to be expected and relied upon. if one goes above and beyond the required responsibilities, then by all means i will tip but i don't feel we should feel obligated because of the conditions they work in.

I'm not. I'm actually debating whether or not to tip the UPS man, though. He has actually stopped me on the street if he happens to see me while driving by, to "schedule" a drop off time for packages, just so I don't have to go pick them up, or have delivery rescheduled. That's above and beyone.

Give me a break...they knew that when they signed up for a mail carrieir's job. They get paid like everyone else for the job they do. I will not be tipping for someone to do their job. I don't get tips for my job, why should they? It's not like they work for tips only, which is a totally different story. I will not be tipping, the mailman, garbage men or anybody else for that matter this holiday season. JMHO.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?

We tipped last year and plan to do the same this year, but with a gift card, not cash.

He even sent us a thank you card afterwards.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?

My mailperson is a woman about 30 ... she is a new mother. I just gave her a baby gift. At Christmas, I bake her cookies ... and she is always very appreciative. I never thought of offering a cash tip ... just not me.

Re: anyone NOT plan on tipping the mailman?

We don't tip anyone. Mailman, garbage man, nothing. I guess it is different in the south because there is no expectation to give tips to service providers.

Yes they had this on the news the other morning, they are not allowed to rec monetary gifts.

Federal regulations state that they cannot receive cash gifts. They CAN receive non-monetary gifts up to $20, however. DW used to be a letter carrier, so we tip our carriers.... Chat Icon
