Anyone on here really into supplements/nutrition?
I've been reading information about women over 40 since I started noticing some weird things happening with me, namely bloating and unexpected weight gain. I see a lot of recommendations for liver detox supplements and use of amino acids. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with that and what your experience was. Thanks!

I don’t use any supplements but it does seem it is harder to lose weight as you get older. I have seen that cutting down on carbs and sugars really help.
I bloat during ovulation and periods.
I think I am going through peri menopause though as Aunt Flo hasn’t been around since October.

Re: Anyone on here really into supplements/nutrition?
This age is no joke. I literally tried everything. I'm 50 and the only thing that has helped is intermittent fasting (IF) I started in October at 16/8 and Im doing 23/1 now. I also do the Ketogenic diet or low carb + vegetarian + rawfoods. Also couple times a week I will do greens juicing, wheatgrass and take ph greens. I got alot of stuff from Sherry's and Wild by Nature. I walk everyday lunch time except for days like yesterday/today. I feel so much better its unbelievable.
There is alot of info on everything on youtube.
eta: dont forget water minimum 64oz, sometimes a gallon a day.

My DH does this too. He eats once a day but he has more like an hour and a half window. Generally when you are eating keto you don't get hungty because your blood sugar is steady and you also stop producing the hormone grelin which causes hunger. Also fat is far my satiating and for longer than carbs.

No. Since he started this lifestyle he is never sick. This diet really focuses on low inflammation. No soy, canola, etc) and that may have something to do with it Disclaimer though, I eat like utter shitt and am never sick either so....it may be luck of the draw when it comes to immunity.

I have done both of those things. I did keto. I definitely looked better but I fell off the wagon and have not been able to get back on. Plus my cholesterol was through the roof. When I added in IF, it made no difference at all which is weird because I was eating less.
Right now, I'm doing WW, run 3x a week, do either weight training, HIIT or yoga the 4 other days and drink between 80-100 oz of water per day and I have been steadily gaining weight and bloating. I'm so frustrated.

That’s great. I try and do WW and count points but can eat like shit too and knock on wood, don’t get sick. I try during the week keep with the meals and snacks.
I wish I could eat like that but I love food too much and so happy that my family and friends enjoy food too lol

I could never do it. Honestly he likes it but I find it super depressing personally. Eating is part of life IMO. So many social events revolve around eating for better or worse. Eating once a day....just seems so so sad.

Definitely dont give up. It can be quite frustrating and Im sorry you are going thru this. It took a while for me to find what works. lots of tweaking and cussing. Like with Keto 75% fat 25% protein and 5% carb works but some days I fall short. For the bloating I had to give up dairy(milk and creamers) and almost all types of cheezes. Bacon, avocado, salmon and fish oils are every day. My cholesterol was really bad too, then every morning I started taking Metamucil then stopped because omg it is tooo sweet. Now I just do the straight Psyllium (white bottle with red writing) but it is an acquired taste. sometimes I take it at night before bed too.
Kudos to you on all that exercising. me im too lazy Oh,and Im not eating less per sey. 1200 cals. I try to pack in the calories like say for example half a chicken or a whole fish baked, egg salad with a dollop of mayo , avocado and ricotta. when I want a break from the meats its harder to pile in the calories vegetarian so I have to get creative.

And what does he do when watching a movie. Or tv. With no snacks? Just sit there like a psycho?

Re: Anyone on here really into supplements/nutrition?
I’d caution you about things that promise detox or cleansing as I’ve never heard of reputable doctors recommending them. That’s what your organs are for. You could get a physical to see if everything is working ok or if you have a certain deficiency somewhere.
Just remember supplements aren’t regulated. They can make any claims they want and aren’t held to safety standards like real meds.
That being said, I take a multivitamin and notice a difference if I forget for a few days. I also take tumeric for inflammation - this one I feel like it can do no harm. I typically take apple cider vinegar diluted as it’s supposed to help with bloating and gas.
I always find I do best with a veggie-forward diet, and lots of exercise. As you age, you lose muscle mass naturally so weight bearing activity is important.
Some previous suggestions seem very extreme for me. To each his own but I know it would never work, I’d rather stay 10 pounds overweight personally.

Lmao. Yes! Well he does most of his TV watching during his eating window. So we'll eat dinner while watching TV. He will eat dinner and then his "snacks ". But yeah during the day it's all black coffee, turmeric tea, seltzers and sugar free gum. I can't. I know he is very used to this now and claims he doesn't mind it but Jesus Christ man, life is short! I joke that he plugs himself in at night to charge like a bot.

Sorry, but I’m going to have to chime in here.
Do people really eat while watching a movie on TV? I get popcorn at the theatre, but that’s about it. Oh yeah, I’l get the usual wine or beer that is offered here.
I guess I have different habits.

I eat watching anything on TV lol. My family eats all day and all night but I try to limit to one snack in the afternoon and one at night. Last night I had a bag of popcorn while watching TV as it is only 2 weight watchers points for the entire bag.

Yep and that is why I literally eat only the serving size. I am that person who will count out 28 cheez-its or 1/4 cup of pistachios for a snack. Lol

Me too. Your liver is meant to detox your body. If it's not working, you'd be in a hospital. None of this stuff works. if you truly have an issue with your thyroid or hormones that is causing issues, your doctor can help with medication. I feel like all these supplements that promise the world to women are just snake oil salesmen looking to make money on people looking for a quick fix
