Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
I started with idea of no drugs but my water broke on Thursday around 3AM and even after cervadil and Pitocin I was only 2cm and had screaming back labor that was predicted to last 10 hrs or more before it was time to push. I was okay until they cranked up the pitocin and then I couldn't handle it. My midwives actually said I needed the epi in order for labor to progress.
As far as someone who did it, my mom did. She said her labor with my brother was unbearable and she wishes they had an epi back then. Me, on the other hand, she said I was a great labor.

are you using a midwife? i feel like they are much more understanding about the mother's preferences when it comes to this than OBs are. If so, they may teach some classes
No -- because I am considered high risk. I wish I could tho.
Thanks for all the info ladies...I am looking into finding a Doula and a Childbirth Instructor. I am in Seaford and we are delivering at NS Manhasset so if you know of anyone in the area..
Yeah I kind of feel like -- for centuries women did this without any drugs, why should I need them now? The most natural thing in the world would be to give birth. But I do realize there may be complications in which case I would do whatever is best for the baby.
I never have any PMS, side effects from drugs, I handle pain well, my pregnancy has been a breeze...so I am hoping it continues into the labor room!! WHo knows, but I'd like to be prepared to go it au natural..

Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
I was, but since I will most likely need a c-section that is completely down the drain

Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
I am. I had a completely natural birth with my first, no pain med of any kind, and to tell you the truth, the pain isn't unbearable. Yes, it hurts, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It was nice to be completely aware of what was happening throughout my labor. I would definitely recomend trying to go natural.

Did you take any classes or use a coach or doula??

Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
No, I didn't. I was considering it, but I had several different women tell me that everything they teach you in the class (ie: breathing technique) goes out the window once you are in labor.

Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
My sister-in-law just had a (mostly) natural childbirth. She did not have an epidural, though she did need pitocin, and she delivered a healthy 6 1/2 pound baby girl.
The choice of whether or not to get an epidural is up to each woman. But I would check with your doctor/hospital if they would allow no IV. If anything bad were to happen, many lifesaving drugs can be given immediately through the IV, and you wouldn't want to waste time putting in an IV during a problem.

Re: Anyone planning on a natural childbirth?
have you ever watched 'a baby story' on TLC? i have been tevo-ing it lately, and find that they show all different kinds of birth experiences, many of them natural. it has definitely clued me in on some things that i do and do not want out of my birth experience. maybe you can check it out if you haven't already.
i have myself participated in plenty of deliveries where the mom did it naturally - for some it seemed wonderful, for others a little less... mostly it came down to the positioning of the baby combined with the woman's pelvic size. and you never really know until you get into the process on that day. but one thing i did notice was, all the moms pretty much forgot about the pain the second the baby came out, drugs or no drugs.
i say, if it means a lot to you to do it the natural way, why not give it a try? good luck in your investigating

Posted by karacg No offense but I am not looking for stories of women who wanted to go natural but have changed their minds, or who think I am crazy to want to do this - I am looking for positive feedback right now. TIA!
Well for me it's a personal decision and to each his own I say! What is right for you may not be right for me and vice-versa. It's just something I believe in - for me. I'm not scared of labor. I know it's going to hurt, but I don't find it to be a scary thing. This is what my body has been designed to do and I'm hoping that come that day... it does what it's supposed to!
If you put your mind to it, you can do it.
I was 100% natural, open minded, read the books and told myself women have done this for centuries...
I won't tell you what happened during the labor, but if you want to go natural go for it, just keep an open mind about it, labor can bring the unexpected.
I would get a doula, or see a midwife. A friend of mine went natural for all three of her kids, she had a midwife, and if it wasn't for her yelling at the nurses, she wouldn't have made it through with natural childbirth.
GOod luck!
I admire ladies who have done it without drugs
