Anyone read about the new car seat suggestions in Parents magazine?
My friend just told me they are suggesting that you keep your child rear facing until 36 inches and 30-35 pounds??? I've been trying to research it, but haven't had time to find much...I can't imagine having Logan rear facing right now (he's @ 36 inches and 35 pounds)

when i went to lamaze the teacher told me about it. She said in Europe they had proven that the injury to the cervical spine has been reduced in children when facing rear longer.

I think it's always been an unwritten guideline to keep them rear facing as long as possible. When I went to the ped. the nurse said yayy you can turn her around. Then the ped said no, wait as long as possible.
Some seats don't go up that high for rear facing. Most go to 30lbs. My Comfortsport is 30, my Boulevard is 35. You have to check the manual. The Cosco Scenera has good ratings and goes up to 35lbs and is only around $40 at Walmart.

OMG on a personal level I think it is crazy my poor child was sitting knees in his chest and miserable beacsue he was over the height/weight requirement (by law) but not at the age requirement.I had to turn him around before he was one he would have probably had back issues if I didn't turn him around even if I never got in an accident-LOL I am just picturing the poor little guy all scrunched up-awww! But hey if your kids fit and will stay that way great!

We talked to the carseat guy of the Nassau Country Safety Board. He told 1 year is the MINIMUM to turn the carseat around. He advised us to wait until DS is 15 months. He is on the bigger size already.
35 Lbs is the MAXIMUM to keep the carseat rear facing.

Re: Anyone read about the new car seat suggestions in Parents magazine?
I think it's great that more articles are promoting staying rear-facing as long as possible. I would be wary about making a sweeping statement about 35 lbs, though. Many seats aren't rated that high, and can cause severe injury if a child is over the weight limit.
I looked into a lot of this over the last few years. There has NEVER been a documented case of a child's legs being injured by being rear-facing and having their legs bent and in their chest. They may be a little uncomfortable, but it's still better than a broken neck....
