Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
DH and I have been wanting to move to FL for the last year and 1/2. We got pretty serious about it in the last few months and DH has been applying to jobs here and there. He got a couple responses, but they all said they wouldn't consider him since he lives in NY. A few even said when he moves to FL to give them a call.
We are thinking of just moving down and looking for jobs once we get there.
DH's parents have a condo in the area we want to move so we could live there for a while.
Anyone have any advice or have you done this? I feel like it's so risky going down without jobs, but we're so sick of talking about moving and we want to go already!
TIA for any advice you can give.

Can he try putting the FL residence on his resume? That may get him considered at more places (that may currently read NY and just throw the resume away). Also, where in FL? If it is near me, maybe I can help?

We thought of that, but if they call for an interview it would be hard for him to just hop on a plane and go down. Maybe he should do that and worry about explaining it later.
We would want to move anywhere from Port St. Lucie to Ft. Lauderdale.
Also considering St. Petersburg/Tampa.
We have family in both areas.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
my brother and his GF moved to florida right out of college with out jobs- they lived in my grandma's condo for free while they searched
they said that was the biggest mistake they made- I would not leave NY with out one of you having a job- that's just me- I couldn't

that's what i was going to suggest. my cousin did the same thing when she made the move to San Diego a few years ago. she put her brothers address in SD on her resume and just lied and said she was out of town and wont be available for an interview until X date. and since she was in SD just about every other week it worked out fine.

you'll be back in a few weeks, can he set up all interviews for then?
I don't live in any of those areas so I can't help, I am so sorry.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
I did that. It was really scary and I actually didn't get a job for a few months (although it took me a while to seriously start looking). If you can stay at your IL's condo for free and keep your expenses low, I say go for it!

I think though, that they may fair better since both have solid work experience in their respective fields, rather than being just out of college.
Jess, I would probably keep an eye on how many job openings come up in particular areas in your field, this way, even if you don't get something right away, you can tell if it's in demand, or harder to get.
save 3 months worth of expenses...and start hitting the pavement. if you can survive financially, give it a shot.
best of luck.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
I think if you have a savings you could do it. But start with putting a FL address on the resume. It's very easy to hop a flight to FL and it would be worth it. These days, last minute flights aren't astronomical!

that's a great Idea about putting the FL address on the Resume.

.
I agree with that- I just personaly wouldn't want me and my DH to be looking for jobs in another state- I would feel better if at least one of us had one- or if we had 3 months expenses saved on top of what we saved for a down payment
getting jobs in FL is not that easy- they are mostly sales and service related jobs
my brother and his FW- still don't have the type of jobs they could have up here- she turned down a $65K starting salary job with Amex to move down to FL and my brother does mortgages- and not to put that down b/c my DH does them- but my DH didn't go to Lehigh (or any college)

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
We relocated and I had a job already lined up but DH did not. It took him just over 2 months to find a job and it was definitely an emotion/financial drain on us.
It all depends on your personal savings situation - if you feel comfortable, it definitely is easier to find a job when you are local.
Good luck!

I would use a FL address and tell them you are moving there shortly when interviewing.

Yea we are going back down in april but just a friday to sunday for a wedding (wedding is on friday night).
I am going to tell DH to put the FL address on his resume and if he gets some calls maybe he can interview that friday we are down there. We'll have to make our flight earlier in the morning, but it would be worth it!
Thanks for the ideas deb.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
We went to college in Tampa, then moved back up to NY with no jobs lined up. We were fine, with a bit of networking, everything worked out.
Last June we moved down to Charlotte, no jobs lined up and pregnant . We took out a cobra policy for me and took the plunge. EVERYTHING has worked out fine. DH took a gamble by leaving his NY salary, but he just got another promotion and he is on his way to places we never thought we would get to in NY.
The key is though that we had no debt and had a savings..we did not have to touch it, but it was there to take the stress out of it all.

Wow, congrats to you and your DH! That's so great that everything worked out. We have a savings but would hate to touch it... How long did it take for your DH to find a job in charlotte? If you don't mind me asking, what is his line or work?

thanks, restaurant management. we moved first week of June, he was hired by June 20th. We went through a headhunter. I lived in Tampa for years, never had an employment problem at all. There are call centers all over the place down there, the work is boring, but it pays well, you could use it as a transistion job. Also, if you have table waiting experience or bartending, you will have no problem finding that quick. That was our back up plan, so that we would not have to touch the savings.
I am familiar with apartments down there and neighborhoods, keep me in the loop if you have any tampa questions.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
My DH and I were going to last year but we chickened out at the last minute. Had an offer on our house & everything. We just felt like it was too quick and risky. Our house got a good offer within 2 weeks. If we had more time to find jobs I think we would have done it. What helped was we used my MIL's NC address so we "appeared" local.

Re: Anyone relocate to another state without having a job?
We moved to charlotte a little over two years ago. I had a transfer set up through my job, w/ my NY salary, so I knew, worse came to worse, we'd be able to squeak through if DH didnt find something right away (he also had a contingency plan with his NY employer in place).
If you have the savings, and the stomach for the unknown, then go for it, things tend to have a way of working themselves out. Just seems unlikely one would want to out themselves in that situation though. Before going though, I would make sure that your and DH's industries are a good fit for where you're going. (Im an accountant in financial services, dh is a banker, I knew that Charlotte would be a good fit, somewhere else probably would have been riskier.)
