Anyone RH negative and taking Clomid/doing an IUI?

I was told by my RE that I am RH negative, and my DH is going for a blood test Monday to determine what he is. She said if my DH is also RH negative, then I don't have anything to worry about. But if he is found to be RH positive, than I may have an issue getting pregnant and when I do, my baby may need a blood transfusion upon delivery because of an antibody my blood produduces to attack my baby's blood. This is making me so nervous because when I had my first MC, I was supposed to be given a shot (which I wasn't aware of at the time), and I never got one. This has my RE concerned, so now I'm going for a complete blood workup.

I've been freaking out ever since, but after speaking to a nurse this morning, she calmed me down a bit. My dr wants me to go back in April to begin Clomid, and in the meantime DH is going for a SA on Monday and we're both attempting to lose weight and make a healthier life change before we attempt an IUI in April/May.

I'm just hoping there's someone on here whose in the same boat as me,

At what point did you miscarry? You need the shot if your blood mixes with the baby's blood and you start to create antibodies against RH+ blood. Once you have the antibodies, they're hard to get rid of.

But the baby doesn't have red blood cells until several weeks into the pregnancy.

I was 7 weeks 3 days and this was back in 07. Not sure if this makes a difference, but I went to planned parenthood when I had the MC.

In general when one is RH -, it is only a problem when the father is RH+. If that is the case, the baby can be either - or +. If the baby is -, there would be no need for the rhogam shot (this shot is given to ensure the mother does not produce antibodies to the possibly positive blood). Generally a baby's blood type is not tested until after birth, so in the meantime they give the rhogam shot at 28 weeks, at birth (if baby is positive), and if there is significant bleeding before 28 weeks. The shot is "active" for 12 weeks.

Generally being RH - is not a big deal, but if your body did produce antibodies when you were pregnant, subsequent pregnancies would be high risk and you would need to be monitored closely.

They can absolutely test your blood to see if you did make the antibodies. They can also type your husband. If he is negative, there is no way you created antibodies. I highly doubt you will have a problem.

Also, this has nothing to do with IUI and Clomid. It is just because of the miscarriage and not receiving the rhogam shot. There would be the same potential issue no matter how you conceive.

Also, I'm almost certain you were too early in your pregnancy for there to be a risk of you creating antibodies.

I am very sorry for your loss. I also think you will be okay in terms of the RH factor when you want to conceive again. Good luck with everything!

Thank you for this information. It basically sums up all of the questions and concerns I had.

I feel so much better after reading everyone's responses. I didn't want to over-react until we found out what blood type my DH is, but that's easier said than done lol. We've been actively trying for quite some time now, and I felt like this was another roadblock for us.

Thanks again, you ladies and this board are amazing Chat Icon !

Re: Anyone RH negative and taking Clomid/doing an IUI?

My Dh is pos. I am neg. I did IUI with Clomid.

You do have to get a shot at 20 weeks pg and right after birth. It has NO effect on the first child at all. If your child is also neg it will have no effect either. You also must get the shot again if you have any bleeding during your pregnacy.

This issue is if you have a pos child. Your body will produce anitbodies against that blood type and if you have a pos child later it could attack it. But, if you get the shots you will be fine. It totally cancels it out.

ETA: I did just read about the MC. I did get a shot after i MCed because I knew my blood type. But, I think they can pull an antibody level and tell you what is going on. And I am so sorry for your loss.
