There’s also a story now about a couple from Colorado who were poisoned with insecticide in their room at the same hotel - can’t link on my phone - but they made it back to the US and their doctor diagnosed the poisoning.
Just saw this story teased on the news right now. I have to watch

Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
Are they saying that some of these people may have allegedly been poisoned from consuming products from the mini bar? Isn't the mini bar stocked with pre-packaged items? How would they not have noticed the prepackaged drink they picked up wasn't previously tampered with? It's not like the mini bar is stocked with mixed drinks and cocktails where I could see it being spiked with something. Just confused by some of these stories.
Also, they're only reporting on Americans. That doesn't give you accurate info on the number of people dying in these resorts. I doubt it's just Americans being targeted.

There have been reports of tainted bottles in Mexico as well. Alcohol can be shipped worldwide, especially the mini bottles that are found in the mini bars. The resort may have unknowingly imported tainted bottles.

Just read Barbara Cochrans (from shark tank) brother died there in April! They said it was a heart attack and he was found in his room. Crazy.

I have been to the Hard Rock in DR where they claim two people stayed. My very first thought when this story first broke was how the hard liquor in the mini bar is stored. It isn't closed mini bottles. It is big open bottles that are upside down and you press to get alcohol out to make a drink. I still remember it. I thought of it immediately. My thought is someone is putting something in it and these people are getting poisened. I saw a clip of a journalist going to a room to do a story on this and immediately pointing the same thing out, that they are not closed mini bottles, but open big bottles.
Very scary!

Who can afford to use the mini bar? Aren't Snickers bars like $25 and a can of coke like $12? I never once in my life have touched mini bar for that very reason!

It’s free at all inclusives, and bottles like the op states. They’re full bottles upside down.
It’s a shame. I love the Caribbean, but dh never was comfortable. I doubt we’ll be going back to these places.

Same here! Most of the time I don't, but this is an all inclusive so mini bar cost nothing.

Exactly....when we went to Mexico, they had the same thing, that is why we stuck to the canned beers in the fridge.

Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
Wow I had no idea about the open bottles of liquor in the mini bars - I figured it was all closed bottles like in a regular hotel - the poisoning stuff makes so much more sense now! And is so scary. I have not been and will never go to DR or Mexico!

Im very surprised that the Hard Rock which is a very expensive and hight end resort has a set up like that. Seems kind of ghetto to me, I never been because I can't see myself spending that much for a Caribbean vacation.
However, I've been to may other resorts in DR and there has never been any open bottles in the fridge. it's always closed cans and water. Hard Liquor you have to get the drinks at the bars/restaurants.

Maybe things will change now but a few years back that’s the way it was at Hard Rock. Then I saw a news segment the other day with reporter in the Hard Rock room and it was just as I remember it, open upside down bottles on the door. He made a point of it being like tgat.

That’s such a terrible thing to implement. I would never drink anything that was open already from a fridge at a hotel. All that money for the hotel and they can’t give you closed mini liquor bottles. I can’t believe that idea lasted this long.

Seriously! That's so unbelievably gross and unsanitary. I had no idea something like that even existed because all the minibars I've ever seen have had prepackaged snacks and drinks and like you said charge $15 for water and cans of soda. I could never see open bottles in a hotel room and think "yum, let me mix myself a drink". Setting aside the possibility of someone tampering them with poison, my first thought would be what the fukcer who stayed in the room before me did to them. I have to wear a body condom just to sleep in hotel beds, I'm certainly not drinking from the fountain of filth

We stayed in a high end resort in Cabo and it had the same thing. There were bottles of tequila, vodka, rum and I forget what else by the bar area. They were mounted on the wall and you could pour shots from them.
I wanted to take my kids to the Nickelodeon resort but there is no way we are going there now.
