anyone skip "baby" furniture and just buy "big kid" furniture for the nursery?

for DS i reused furniture we already had and bought a crib to match--worked out perfectly! we're going to buy him his "big boy" furniture when we convert his crib.

for DD we don't have any furniture to use for her room so we have to buy everything. i never really liked the traditional "baby" furniture and would rather buy the "big girl" furniture now with a crib to match. DH doesn't think it's a good idea because the dresser is too high to be a changing table--i agree so i said we could just get one of those small changing tables to put in the room since it's a pretty big room and use the dresser as a dresser only.

what are your thoughts? i think it's smarter to buy it now since it's pretty much the same price as the "baby" furniture, but is physically larger and she will grow into it better.

anyone else do this?Chat Icon

Re: anyone skip "baby" furniture and just buy "big kid" furniture for the nursery?

All the furniture we have in DD's room will be her "big girl" furniture....the crib goes to toddler, to full bed. She has an airmoire that is "supposed" to be used for a tv pull out, but it does have a rack in it that I hang her clotheson...and a big dresser/hutch that I just put her changing pad on top of and removed a shelf for when she got bigger.

It made more sense to me to have furniture that she would grow into, because we couldn't afford to buy a whole new set when she got older.

I did exactly what you did for DC#1. When I have a DC#2 I will buy big kid furniture.

For DD I bought all white furniture w/ a white crib and changer. For DS we are re-using the white crib and changer but waiting until he's in a bed to buy "real" furniture for his room. I would like to get him something in wood so it would look weird if I bought it now and mixed the wood w/ the white crib and changer kwim?

check out stanley young america. this is what we have, right now we only have a dresser + the two cribs, but they have so many different pieces of furniture you can add on as they get older, and it is not babyish at all. In fact I could put it in my room and you would never know the difference.

ETA: we use the dresser as a changing table, and it is the perfect height.

that's why i figure it makes sense to buy all the "big girl" furniture now--if we just buy a crib with one dresser, we'll have to get a new set in a few years since they probably won't be making it anymore. and i think it's pointless to get a whole set of baby furniture since we have intentions of getting big kid furniture by the time we convert her crib. so it's all or nothing in my head.

has anyone used the higher dresser as a changing table? it's a good 8 or so inches higher than a changing table, but i think it might be okay. i'm pretty short (5'5") but maybe it's because i'm used to the lower dresser that i use for DS.

Couldn't you just use the same changing table from your son, even if it is in his room?

it would be way too inconvenient. DD will be up every few hours the first few months--i don't want to turn on DS's light or have her cries wake him up. also DS's room is very small--i only have room for his diapers. that's why i was thinking one of those small changing carts

I bought Rylan a set from BRU but it will also be his big boy set...hopefully his forever set...lol. He has a convertible crib...dresser w/ hutch and an armoire. I brought an adult sized hanger to the store when I bought it to make sure it fit in the armoire because I heard some don't.

As far as the changing table I never used one. the bed...couch...floor worked for me...lol.

We did what you're suggesting and also purchased Stanley Young America. You can look at it at Raymour & Flannagan (although they don't carry cribs). I think I also looked at it at Behr's. If you go on to their website they have a store listing. It worked out prefectly for us. I figured that the furniture is expensive enough - we sould buy something once that they will always have instead of replacing it in a few years when they grow out of it.

Good luck!

For both kids I bought an armoire, dresser and crib that will turn into a full size bed. The dresser and armoire is not baby looking at all.

For DS we were fortunate to be able to borrow a crib. B/C of that we just used a dresser that we already had....

I couldnt see spending a ton of money on nursery furniture when he was our last child.

Once he's fully ready for a big bed we'll buy him his bedroom set...

I did not like the quality of any baby stuff that I saw.

I bought a cheap crib, then a restoration warehouse dresser. he's getting a log cabin bed.

I am doing the same with #2.

We bought Bellini furniture and we're not buying anything else. The low dresser has a removable part for the changing table so now it's just a regular dresser.

We only bought a crib as far as "baby" furniture.

Her dresser is a Thomasville dresser that was part of the set from our guest room and happens to also be the perfect height for changing.

We sort of did, we bought an armoire and bookcase that was more of "big kid" and the crib and changing table match, the crib does convert and the changing table turns into a normal nice dresserChat Icon

yes.
we never got any baby furniture.

for this baby my dad is going to make the dresser we'll use as a changing station- and then another smallish dresser.. it will be styled to be used until this baby is big.

Of course, b/c we are team green, I'm not sure what I'm going to do- but maybe an English Chestnut color. I wanted to do bun feet- but that might be too girly.

Never purchased baby furniture other than the crib and changing table.

Once we ditch the changing table the 2 pieces on each side become one.

I don't have much furniture b/c I have decent closet space- plus I'm the type who feels less is more.

Anyway- this will be their furniture for a very long time.

We got our DD's crib as a hand-me-down so all we needed to get was the 'other' furniture. We decided to get adult furniture because we wanted her to be able to use that furniture the entire 18 years or so that she's home with us.
We got a tall dresser and a long shorter dresser that would normally have a mirror attached to it, though we opted not to get the mirror. We put her changing pad on top of the long short dresser. It's working out great for us. Chat Icon
