my goodness, how long is it?! My licensing exam was horrendous, so I can kind of relate, but it was only 4 or so hours.
Good luck to anyone taking the bar soon!
I believe this is 2 full days. 4 hours is like an AP exam.

Not me, but I was wondering, why do you have to check into a hotel?? my goodness, how long is it?! My licensing exam was horrendous, so I can kind of relate, but it was only 4 or so hours.

My brother went to UPenn and wasn't allowed to take the test in NYC (those spots are reserved for people who have gone to law school in the city), so he wound up being assigned to Albany. He had already been hired and his firm booked a suite of rooms at the nicest hotels and had limos drive them in the morning. He was editor of the law review and top 3 in his class and was still freaking out.
Taking the test in Albany was an awful experience. I took the NY part in Albany (Pepsi Arena) and the multistate and CT essays in CT. DH and I booked the hotel kind of late so we stayed at a horrible motel about 15 minutes outside of Albany. The bed had a huge wet spot that smelled like disinfectant. The cleaning person must have dropped cleaning solution on the bed. I barely slept b/c I was stressed out about the exam.
When we get to the arena, it takes forever to check in. I finally get in and wait in a huge line for the bathroom. There were hardly any stalls so it took a while. Apparently, while I was in the bathroom, the test began. There was no announcement over the loudspeaker or anything. I didn't even know it had started until I walked into the room. Of course I was freaking out that the test had already started. I'm glad I brought ear plugs b/c there were birds in the arena that were chirping really loudly. Then we had less than an hour for lunch and there really aren't any places around the arena that serve lunch. We met up with our friends and went across the street to eat. We finally got our food (which was basically inedible) about 5 minutes before we had to go back.
When the test was over, we had to drive back to CT to take the multistate part the next day. Luckily DH drove us. There was a horrible rainstorm where we could barely see the road. We got back late that night. Again I barely slept. One of our friends had to head from Albany to NJ to take the exam. He was supposed to fly, but the flight got cancelled. I can't remember whether he was able to take a train or had his brother come pick him up. Either way he didn't get to NJ until 5 or 6 am.
Taking the test in CT was much more pleasant since we lived close to the test center. I was definitely working off of adrenaline b/c I barely slept for those 3 days. That was a horrible summer.

Can I tell you how much everyone's stories are freaking me out?
I have never heard him sound so exhaused on so many levels as I did last night.
I'm afraid that there's like a hotel horror story waiting to be told tonight. If he's even able to speak tonight.

It's about 6 hours per day plus an hour break.
The bar exam is only given twice per year. I think a lot of people check into hotels, even if they live close by, b/c they don't want to tempt fate. You never know what problems may arise with public transportation or on the highways that day.
Also, anyone taking the NY bar who went to law school outside of NY and/or was not a NY resident had to take the NY portion of the exam somewhere upstate, typically in Albany. I lived in CT so I took the exam in Albany and got a hotel room there.

Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every time the "anniversary" of my exam passes, I feel weird, like I should be studying, like I better hurry and go check into the hotel. Or I better figure out the Rule Against Perpetuities right NOW. Or I feel like, wow, I actually saw the sun this year, unlike THAT summer. Or I feel OLD. It has been 14 years and I can still tell you what I wore, who I ran into at the exam site and the whole story of the boyfriend who picked a fight the minute I got home (******* coulda let me rest for a minute).
I always tell this to anyone taking the test: When I was studying, there was one company that had a review course whose slogan was" Do It Once, Do It Right. Never again."
Best of Luck and it will be behind you very soon!!!
14 years that's nothing, its 17 for me and I've pretty much blocked the whole experience. But I did get on the news because I was standing close to JFK jr. who was also taking it. Luckily, I passed the first time.

Re: anyone taking the bar exam this week
Best part of the test---I had become acquaintances with a guy who was in my bar review class. He was such a nice guy. At lunchtime the first day he announced that the exam was really hard and that he already did so many things wrong that there is no way he could pass. He said he was going home. A few of us convinced him to just stay and take the rest of the test. That night he said the same thing. At every lunch time and every break there was a group of us convincing him to stay and finish the test. He kept saying that he knew he failed and we kept making him stay. When I went to my swearing in, he was the first person I noticed in the room, also being sworn in for having passed on the first try. Not everyone gets sworn in on the same day, in fact it is very few at a time, but I think I was meant to know that he passed and I am glad I took the time to cheer him on every day. It probably helped me, too!

Unfortunately, I think most people know someone who had a horror story, but it all works out in the end. My friend who almost got stuck in Albany ended up passing both the NY and NJ exams on little to no sleep. A friend of a friend's fiancee got stuck in the bathroom of his hotel room, but luckily he was able to make it out on time (and he passed). It just adds some stress to an already stressful situation. Don't worry, your DH will be fine and relieved once it's over.

I am sure I sounded like that and I passed! Also, after the test I realized that I skipped an entire essay. I mapped out my answer on scrap paper and then never transferred it into the test book. So, as I waited for the results all those months I was FREAKING. Plus, I had that answer nailed, if only I put it into my book. I still freakin' passed!!! And now I am wondering if they even use the blue exam books anymore!
A person who took the right courses during law school will pass the exam. Studying for the bar was just review of things I had learned for 3 years. It was overwhelming b/c it's so important but the exam is not impossible. I think your DH will have no problems!!!!!!!!!!!

Word of advice: LET HIM DECOMPRESS HOWEVER HE WANTS WHEN HE COMES HOME!
Seriously, it takes a few DAYS for some people to "come out of it" after the exam. I was CONVINCED I had failed and everyone telling me "I'm sure you passed" made it worse -- b/c I thought if I did fail then I let them down. It was all totally irrational and went away after a few days...
Just understand he may need some chill time.
I'm SURE he did great!

What's hysterical for me is that I came out of the last day of the bar exam and decided that I was going to party. Somehow (and I'm still impressed with myself to this day), I stayed out with DH and my friends until about 4:30 am!!

He is NOT allowed!!
I've planned a long weekend for us in Cape Cod/Nantucket and we are heading out tomorrow morning!
But I'm impressed with your staying up skills after putting your brain through the equivalent of 10 marathons.
PS - Kara, he asked me to plan a long weekend, somewhere, as long as he didn't have to fly. He gets to pick everything that we do this weekend, too. Even if it's just laying in the B&B or in the sand.

That sounds like a great way to decompress after the exam!
