Yes - they are good for when the baby is active and moving around - if you have things to do you can put him in the pack and play with some toys so he can occupy himself.
Yes - lol - they have regular pack and plays - you don't need to get one with the changing table or anything fancy if you don't need it.

I never use one and found it unnessary but other moms love theirs. My DD is active and I still don't regret my decision. Between the swing, exersaucer, platmats, toys. It was just another huge piece in my den.

Playpens are great ideas! They contain the kidlets when you have to get something done and they actually offer a sense of security for them when they begin to walk!

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I don't technically need one where we live. But I know when the time comes, I will feel safer knowing she is in her pack n play when I have other things to do. And I also will be using it when we go out. I know my sister and SIL were forever setting theirs up when their babies fell asleep at family parties (usually outdoor ones)

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
OK another question on this -- I have one but it is still in the box. I have read other moms have already set theirs up. I don't think we will need it for a while (I have a bassinett, swing and bumboo seat) -- when do you really start to actually USE this??

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I set mine up already because I got the one with the changing table attached and, living in a colonial this will be where we change the baby when we are downstairs. It is in my office so I also figured that I will put the baby to nap in there during the day so that I can try and get some work done also.
ETA: i think it depends on the setup of your house!

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I got one for 2 main reasons:
- I have 2 small dogs and I can't have the baby on the floor with them. They are so sweet but really I can't have them jump and kiss the baby to death
- I will want the baby in the room with me but in the PNP so I can actually do something too and not run everywhere after the baby.

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I love mine. DS has been asleep in his since 7:30am and I have cleaned and paid bills and I can check on him very easily. I also use the changing table all of the time.
But as Diana said, there are ones that are just plain old pack and plays (they don't have "playpens" anymore for infants, they are geared more for older babies)
You don't know until when your baby is born where they will like to sleep. DS happens to like to sleep in there and hates his swing, bouncy, etc.

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I never used my pack and play, but I did gate off a baby safe room. I hink for my second one I will use it more to protect her from her big brother.

Re: anyone that does not need a pack and play..question?
I am not saying that I expect to do a ton of traveling, but my friend had her son sleep in the pack and play when we spent a few days on Fire Island. I expect to take it to places where the baby may need to sleep. I have also seen people use the smaller ones right on the beach, with protective covers that were like umbrellas.
