What I don't understand is who at Columbia invited him to speak. The president of Columbia got up and blasted him prior to his speech.
Bollinger, the president of Columbia invited him to speak. and according to the article I just posted, Bollinger did nothing but praise him
On 1010 Wins they made it sound like he just went off on him

Of course there isn't. He made sure of it. And, if there is, you can bet your arse they don't tell anyone for fear of their lives.

according to students, bollinger's line of questioning was rather weak which prevented him from engaging the president in a real conversation/debate. i did not attend but this is what i heard from students.

Bollinger, the president of Columbia invited him to speak.
it was the School of International and Public Affairs dean that invited him to speak as part of a series the school does. there was controversy because initially she did not notify Bollinger, who normally wouldn't need to give approval, except for the fact that Ahmadinejad is a huge world figure and poses enormous security risks for the entire Columbia campus.

He is frightening, but I'm actually glad to hear what he has to say. I believe I have a full perspective now on what a complete and total launatic he really is.
As a country, I think he's someone we really need to keep a very close eye on. He's dangerous ... very dangerous.

For as much as I despise what he stands for - I am grateful to live in a country where we would allow him to stand up and speak his mind. - I find it interesting to hear the thoughts and opinions straight from a person's mouth -

If what he says outloud here is scary imagine what he is doing that he doesn't want anyone to know about...and I am sure it is something big
And also what ideas he may put in the heads of others such of these terrorist cells that are said to be all over....really scary
Exactly my point. There are SOME things we can't say....we don't have full freedom when it comes to our safety at this point and it is DUE TO HATING, CRAZY, IGNORANT PEOPLE LIKE HIM. I can't sit on a plane and say "i think the plane is going to crash, I have a bomb etc". Watch how quick you get tossed off/arrested if you do this.
Heck, we don't even have the freedom in our country anymore to feel safe on something everyday, like a plane, car, train, etc. I would lke MY freedom from terrorism back too...and hearing this man speak certainly doesn't make me feel anymore secure that WE as Americans will give a PLATFORM to someone like this, when we KNOW that all THEY give us is FEAR and HATE.
So why would this lunatic be given a PLATFORM to preach hate and practically scare the crap out of us 9/11 victims here? I think it is ridiculous that we would allow him to do his "job" of preaching hate....So I guess we should have supported him going down to Ground Zero to put a wreath, since he has freedom here in America!!!???!!
And DON'T our police have BETTER THINGS TO DO, like protect US from terrorism, than waste their time on a POS like this???

And what do you think we're fed???? Seriously, news throughout the world, no matter how impartial it portends to be, has a political slant.
I actually think the debate that this has sparked is interesting. We are usually "told" through the media about the platforms and agendas of leaders around the world. To actually hear what he stands for from his own mouth allows us to form opinions of our own - and that's what freedom of speech is about.

Do you really believe that?!?!?! It happens all the time and we probably wouldn't even know it when it does! Just by choosing what to report they're shaping history. Unfortunately, the American perspective is very narrow.

I can't believe you're comparing western media and leaders to Iran - the world's largest sponsor of terrorism (Hezbolla, hamas, AQ) and holocuast deniers
eta: Iranian sponsored terrorists killed 241 US Marines in Beirut who were there on a peace keeping mission

Re: Anyone watching Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking to the United Nations???
My point was that you shouldn't take everything you read as gospel. New York has three main newspapers, only one of which is remotely legitimate. The Daily News ran the headline "The Evil Has Landed" and the New York Post ran "Madman Iran Prez" - hardly impartial reporting.
Let the man speak, listen to what he has to say and then make your own informed deicisons - that's all I'm saying.

I have heard him speak, many times. the cover of the NY Post and Daily News mimick my POV.

That's fine for that to be your point of view. It's not fine for the newspapers to report it that way. That's not the function of the press.

Re: Anyone watching Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking to the United Nations???
A few things
Whehter or not he should have be invited to speak at Columbia, I don't know. On one hand, do we really want to give this man a platform? but on the other hand it sparks a lot of debate, it brings world issues to the forefront and it shows that unlike in Iran, we have free speech. In the Times an article remarked that students in the audience at Columbia laughed at him and jeered at him. We are allowed to laugh at our leaders here in the US, but that is not allowed in Iran. This is one of the only times he's been exposed to an open forum in this way.
The Columbia President's bashing of Ahmadinejad was in poor taste and it was a PR move. He was responding to everyone's disapproval of his invitation and he was just trying to get back on the good side. This is one thing in Ahmadinejad's speech that I agreed with. He shouldn't have invited him if he was going to attack him before he spoke.
The things he says are frightening and incorrect, but I think it takes a lot of courage to be able to hear and discuss what he has to say. I think people need to be aware of what's going on in the world.
