My mom smacked me hard in the face! LOL! She Claims its good luck to do this to a woman when she gets her period for the first time. The she wishes me luck! HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD OF THIS TRADITION?? lol to this day we laugh our butts off at this memory lol
Definitely a Jewish tradition -- my aunt did the same thing to my cousin. I was always thankful my mom didn't do it to me. I didn't question.
My grandma is Czech and we got the slap.
my poor cousin who is 12 just got the slap. I know she loves coach wristlets - get her that and put some pads in it

My mom did the same thing!
Another Jewess here and I DEFINITELY don't remember getting smacked!
I think a gift is such a nice idea, but I agree with the other girls - unless she already knows that you know about her getting her period, I would probably not mention it/buy anything. She'll probably be mortified!

I would have been absolutely MORTIFIED to receive a gift for getting my period... Honestly, it's nice that you're thinking of her like that, but I would NOT give a gift...

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
I seriously thought I needed to go to the E.R. I had no idea what was happening and I thought I was dying or something!! I ran to my mom asking her to call 911 and take me to the hospital. She figured out what was going on pretty quick and had to explain to me, at that moment, what was happening.
Then, we had to go out to dinner!!!! (to "celebrate"). OK - my dad who couldn't even LOOK at me with a straight face, mom, sister who was laughing at me, and brother who kept making faces and comments!!! I wanted to DIE. AWFUL. So, I would say nothing - no reference made of it.
But, I guess a book like a previous poster mentioned would be the best idea if you want to do something.

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
I agree with the previous posters. I think a book is subtle, and may answer questions that she has. I wouldn't make a big deal out of giving it to her either ... maybe just leave it for her in her room?
I was completely mortified and really angry when I found out my mom told some of my aunts. I didn't think it was any of their business.
As for me personally, I had *wonderful* timing - it showed up for the first time the night before I left for a CAMPING trip for the first time!

ITA.
I didn't tell my mom when I got it, but she figured it out because of missing feminine products. And I thought i was being slick.
I didn't get a talk and that was fine with me. The only thing I could think about was I had to deal with this every month for a long time.

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
funny replies, thanks everyone
I got her a cute "camp rock" handbag, like a little one that she can have her "products" in, at school, when she needs them. some cute "boy short" underwear (hoping theyre more snug for the pad holding ) and taking her out to eat. will look into the books, too, thanks for the ideas ! not making a big deal of talking about it in detail, unless she wants to. (and that's what her mom is for )

OMG, i wanted to DIE when i found out that my mom had told people that i got my period
I know.
I would suggest never mentioning it to her till she is like 25
In response to what to give a girl who just got her first period, I was going to say.... privacy!
I would have been mortified if I knew mom told other people..... I was mortified that I had to tell mom!

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
I agree w/ many of the previous posters that I was absolutely mortified when I found out my mother had told my aunt and grandma. Under no circumstances did I want anyone (with the exception of my closest girlfriends) to know.
Maybe you can give it to her mother to give to her? I don't think I would have wanted a gift!

Re: anyone with preteen girls in their lives, question
this post is still going
well I gave her the "cool" little pocketbook, that's JUST big enough to hold some girly items and cute enough to want to take to the bathroom and she LOOVEDD it, and gave her the cool undies (boy cut) and she loved them too.
I gave it to her in private, and we're very close, she told me herself (although I already knew )
tomorrow we're going to a movie (girl scout trip where she chose ME to go with her and then lunch.
thanks again everyone.
and I think my body got jealous of all this talk, because my monthly friend is now tagging along too
