Apple Picking
End of September, beginning of Oct.
I go upstate to Masker Orchards. IMO it's much better than the LI orchards. You drive your car right up to the trees, rather than walking all over the orchard. And the trees are always filled with apples, not like the LI ones. Any time I've gone to a LI orchard there were more apples on the ground than on the tree.

We did it for the first time last year. We went to Harbes Orchard in early september and the selection was great. They take you on a little tractor to the back of the orchard and you pick your way back to the front.

Love Soons in New Hampton Upstate.
It's right off 17.
They have an awesome hayride and a great tasting room for the adults.
It's also not super expensive and every time I've been there it has not been a zoo either.
You could hit the outlets in Woodbury if you wanted to make a day out of it.

Re: Apple Picking
If you are thinking about going on LI, go within the next couple of weeks. I went the first weekend in October and it was slim pickings.
ETA: we usually go out east.

Re: Apple Picking
Do not wait until the end of September or October. Last year most farms were running out of apples by the end of Sept.

Last year we went to Hanks in Watermill- it was nice! I would say mid-September is the best time to go.

Last year we did Lewin Farms around the second or third week of September and hit their farmer's market on the way home. It was a great day! Planning to do it again this year!

Upstate is nothing like LI.
When we go, I generally spend around $50 but that's for goodies like wine, beer, pies, etc.
They charge for the hayride but I think it's only a couple bucks per person.
Slate Hill Orchards is another fun place not too far from Soons. They have free bouncers and stuff for the kids too.
I know they have downsized a lot since recently changing hands but I believe they still do apple picking.
They also have a cute little cafe and the best fresh donuts.

Re: Apple Picking
I would go sooner rather than later. I love to go in October but I just checked the site of a place I like (Blue Jay in Bethel, CT) and they have stated that they have a very small crop this year. Heavy rains in summer 2013 and the long winter of 2014 have limited what they have.

Re: Apple Picking
Just wanted to add we went apple picking on monday at lewin farms. It was perfect! soooo many apples to pick from, and they were ready to be picked. I'd definitly go sooner than later because there was a ton of people already going.

Were the trees at Lewin low enough for the little ones? Planning on Tues. if it doesn't rain.

Lewins farm is $1.25 a pound. It was pretty cheap. Windy acres was $18 for a half peck. Which is like 20 apples. I thought it was kinda expensive.

My 23 month old dd was able to pick all our apples from the ground. Granted we went on Labor Day so there were still a ton of apples, but I don't think you'll have a problem.
Oh but lewin isn't open during the week.

I had to go out east to Mattituck for a Shiva yesterday and the traffic was INSANE, every farm was having some sort of festival and they were all packed so I would say if you're planning on going, go soon.

YES! Go during the week if you can. You don't want to touch that area with a 10 foot pole on the weekends in the Fall. The thought alone gives me major anxiety and raises my BP. I have family out that way and when we have to go out there for a family event in Oct it is absolute insanity. It's a shame that it's become like that... it used to be such a nice area. Now it's tourist and commercial. Sad.
