Hmmm... I am torn on this one. On one hand, it seem harsh to fire this waitress. On other hand: imagine if one of us posted a work document pertaining to a client on a public media site. What do you think would happen to that person?

Apples and oranges. This is what someone ate for lunch. If the picture posted with the article is the one she posted, I see no issue. There's no card info, there's no meal info, there's no franchise location info. I've seen plenty of receipts like this thrown on the ground.

I do understand why Applebee's had to do something- fire her, suspend her, something, but I think it's ridiculous that the pastor wrote that in the first place, found it, and made a big effing deal about it. What a crotchety man.

ETA: Oh, just saw it was a woman. Makes no difference to me, she's still a crotchety b!tch!

I think the Pastor was a sanctimonious cheapskate who was probably ticked off that they were 'told' by Applebees what percent tip to leave, so used her position as an excuse.

However, the waitress should have blacked out the pastors name when she posted it on Reddit. Because while what the pastor did was stupid to begin with, she now has recourse to complain because her name was included in the picture and she can claim she was publicly humiliated.

The pastor then went and made it even worse for herself by complaining and demanding the waitress be fired! Did she not think that doing that would make things even worse for herself?

I do agree she should've removed the name. Though I also agree this pastor deserves to be publicly humiliated.

LOL... Can the pastor be fired? Seriously how does a "pastor" leave the poor waitress $0 tip... And then SHE is fired on top of it?!?! The pastor is just embarrassed that he got caught wronging the waitress and was pissed... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and this is exactly why me and the church just do not mix Chat Icon

It was a large party so the restaurant added 18%, the zero was on the additional tip line.

How could it be a large party? The bill was just about $35. Am I missing something?

This confused me as well!! Did each person spend $5?

They were a group of 10 who apparently tried to skirt the 18% gratuity for parties over 8 by asking for separate checks, which were then all paid by the same person from what I saw in one article.

The waitress fired was a coworker of the stiffed server who posted the receipt on Reddit, if she had redacted the customer's signature she probably wouldn't have gotten fired.

The pastor actually called Applebees and demanded she be terminated. If the pastor had an issue with Applebee's policy, she should have taken it up with corporate, not on the waitstaff, who are only following rules.

So, both were wrong. The waitress shouldn't have included identifying information, the pastor is an azzhole for not tipping waitstaff, some of who make only $2/hr.

As much as I say good for her, the waitress was wrong. She went against the company policy by putting the Pastor's info out there. Yes the pastor was cheap but it is HER MONEY, she can choose to leave a tip or not KWIM. Is it tacky not to, heck yeah.

I get that wait staff depend on tips but we all have to remember that its all a choice. A choice to work as wait staff even with the crappy pay and the customer's choice to tip or not to tip.

FTR-I always tip.

OMG, that is just cheap. Sorry, but to ask the waitress to do that just so you don't have to pay the automatic 18% tip is really pushing it. If you really are watching your money that closely (which some people are) then maybe you shouldn't be going out to eat! That Pastor should be ashamed of herself..

Who cares what they spent, the point is this guy being a dickk whether it was a $5 tip or a $50 tip.

LOL feisty!

I agree the Pastor is a tool for what they wrote...but are we sure they didn't leave a cash tip?
Or maybe the waitress was horrible...they ordered sodas and 2-3 apps...and never saw her again. Asked for the check to go eat elsewhere and was livid they charged 18% tip for horrendous service. I'm sure that would anger most people.
ETA: just saw above posts regarding sep checks. If that's the case it is ridiculous!

She didn't have to leave the comment though. That was unnecessary.

I get that, but I think it was the insulting note that went along with it. Chat Icon Really you're a pastor so you're going to throw God's name in the mix to get out of paying a tip? She should be ashamed. I do understand what you're saying though- she shouldn't have included the name.

Re: Applebee's Controversy- Anyone see this?

I have never, ever not left a tip. Even for crappy service - you just never know what is going on in someone's life. If a waiter was downright nasty (which has never happened) I would maybe leave 15% instead of 20%+ but still something.

The comment was seriously, seriously holier than thou and ridiculous.

Exactly. I don't think anyone said she couldn't tip, people stiff all the time, but to leave the barb about not being worthy of a tip is just AWFUL.

Agreed!

As an aside... DH is a waiter... he had someone write in the tip line "Jesus Loves You" in stead of leaving a tip... You'd be surprised what people do to get out of tipping...

I think there are quite a few problems here.

One of them is that the waitress posted the pastor's signature.

I cannot even imagine if I posted part of a student's paper...let alone one with his or her NAME on it...on the Internet Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The pastor was wrong and the waitess was wrong. Applebees had no choice but to fire her. They are probably hoping the pastor doesnt sue them. Yeah, pastor was a jerk but you cant post post a customers info online and not expect to have consequences.

She brought religion into it. She changed the game with that. I waited tables. It happens - sometimes people stiff you, but hiding behind religion like that is BS. And so much for loving thy neighbor and turning the other cheek. No, she called to have this waitress fired...when this pastor probably has ALL of her bills paid by her congregation.

Since when does G-d have a bank account and bills to pay ?

Pastor doesn't give G-d 10%, Pastor tithes 10% to the church for its operating funds and probably to pay her own salary.

Agreed!

I used to waitress at a chain restaurant in college and Sunday afternoons were the WORST time to work- we had large groups come in after church- they would pull the same crap- try splitting the bill. Then leave $2 (total) on what was a $200 bill.

There were a few customers that would leave those little pamphlets about god instead of a tip.

Ugh- just thinking about working Sundays makes me angry Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Applebee's Controversy- Anyone see this?

I dont think anyone here disagrees that the Pastor was cheap and wrong and should not have brought religion into it. But think of it from a corporate perspective - they had to make an example of the waitress. They may lose customers who fear that their whereabouts, signatures and tip amounts will be made public!!

I get that, but like I said previously....if you want to do something and ballsy as this, don't pay with a cc where you have to leave your name. Dumb move. If you want to be anonymous, pay in cash and don't bring attention that you work for God-people can narrow it down. duh!

This is what I read as well (it was on FB last night). The pastor was wrong AND so was Applebee's for firing the coworker of the server that got stiffed!

I agree they needed to terminate the waitress because she posted identifying info online. If she had redacted the name & left the "Pastor" part, it would have been enough.

And yes the Pastor is a sanctimonious POS. Also as an FYI, it's a 15 member church which is "located" at: External Image

if I worked for the IRS, I'd be investigating her tax exempt status.
