application question re: salary requirements

If a job application asks you to email you cover letter, resume, and salary requirements to them, where do you put the salary requirements? In the cover letter? How do you word it?

Re: application question re: salary requirements

I will usually put it in my cover letter. I haven't written one if forever but it says something like:

My requested salary is $XXX per year, however it is negotiable based on the entire benefits package.

I personally like to leave myself open to perhaps a smaller salary if they have OUTSTANDING benefits such as a flexible schedule, child care, 401K match, company paid insurance, decent vacation time, etc.

Thanks! And I have NO idea what to ask for. I just graduated from grad school so I have my Ph.D. but I have never had a job that pays more than $20,000 a year, lol. A post doc is about $40,000 so I am thinking of asking for a bit higher than that. Thoughts?

I usually give a range rather than an exact number and say something about being flexible depending on the total benefits package.

Try to research what you think the job is worth. See if a similar sounding job is posted elsewhere and if it has a salary, just to get a ballpark figure.

You're worth more than a postdoc for sure.

I agree with PP...try to see what's out there you might be interested in and what those jobs are paying.
