Appropriate "bite size" for 12/13 month old?

I go back and forth with how big or small I should cut up Sasha's food. Or for things like the mini waffles, if I should just give it to her to take bites of.

What is the appropriate size?

Re: Appropriate "bite size" for 12/13 month old?

I break things into pretty small pieces, but I'm kind of paranoid about DS choking. When DH feeds DS, he gives DS bigger pieces. At daycare, DS will get whole crackers and he's very good at taking small bites of them. I'm sure he does that with other food there too. I probably should offer him whole things at home, but I don't. Chat Icon

I don't cut up anything soft or dissolvable bigger than the size of a nickel. Mostly because DS tends to put more than one piece in his mouth.

Meats are all cut up very small-half the size of a dime-I'm paranoid about him choking on meat.

For mini-waffles, chicken nuggets, etc I just hand them to DS and he takes his own bites.

For fullsize items, I still break-up, but DS tends to take his own bites.

I cut things up rather small for Samantha. She loves the little mini pancakes, but I can't give them to her whole because she'll shove the entire thing in her mouth.

I'm paranoid about her choking, so I give her things about the size of a peanut. She seems to do well with it.
