architect?

we are looking to redo our kitchen - but we arent 100% certain what we want to do. we have a large space and want to make sure we are utilizing it to the fullest so we want a professional opinion - can anyone recommend an architect or someone who can come up with design options (we can provide them with measurements or they can come look at the space and measure it on their own). we wouldnt need them to do any other work.

we have a contractor already but he doesnt really deal with design.

some more background info:
we called up an architect that was recommend to us and had the most bizarre convo - he asked if our basement was finished (which it is) then he asked if all of our COs are in place and if they arent he would have to report us etc. we called him about the kitchen so we were baffled...we dont want someone who will come in and inspect the house and report us for things...we just want a kitchen design!

we went to a cabinet place and they offer free design service, with no obligation to buy (they will come measure, take pics, and do some layout options) - but you dont "own" the layout until you put down a deposit. unfortunately they estimated our cabinets/counters to be at 20k alone (not including installation or anything) and that is just not in our budget so we feel bad having them come in and do the design knowing we wont be using them for the cabinets - should we get over the feeling bad and just take advantage of their services?

we are debating going to home depot - but again we dont know if this is a free service

we are willing to pay someone to come in and do designs for us - we just arent sure if home depot is the right place for that bc we dont know if they are trained in design or not.

Re: architect?

We were flooded by Sandy and we used Home Depot in Freeport to design and install our kitchen. We had a really good experience with them. They also installed our floors after Sandy too.

I think there are new laws regarding architects and work without permits. I think they can get in trouble if they leave anything off the building plans that doesn't have permits.

But regardless - we just used Mark Anthony Architecture in Bellmore and he was great

I think this might be the case. We recently used an architect (not crazy about him so I won't recommend) and we are making some changes to our structure (moving our front door, adding a porch, moving some windows around) and he submitted the drawings to the town w/o our looking at them first, and we got dinged on some stuff. The town also has to come in and do an inspection now because we were hit by Sandy and they want to double check all the electric.

We also will be upgrading our kitchen last after the rest of the stuff is done and will probably just go to one of the places already mentioned on here.

We have a large space too and want to utilize everything.

We went to Home Depot. for $100 they came and measured and did the design. We then went to a different Cabinet place as HD was very expensive. If we went with home depot we would have been credited the $100. They did a great job on the design and even the kitchen place was very impressed with the design.
